Yanni
Hi everybody! I'm going to get a 40 gallon tank really soon and I need some ideas for a scape for the tank. If you have any photos of your tank, please put some pictures of it here! Just need some ideas for a new scape.
Brandy
Pardon my 40 breeder algae farm. It is slowly coming under control. It actually will look cool once the log is cleaned up... Hard to photograph in this state, but the ugly duckling stage is a thing.

Isaac M
Here is my 40 gallon, I am posting the hardscape only picture and the most recent picture of the tank. I also have a journal for the aquarium on this forum called “Dirted 40 Breeder Riparium” if you want to check that out for some ideas.
Brandy
@Isaac M I really like the spotlight effect of the floodlights. They cast clear shadows. It looks really cool. 1
Isaac M
@Brandy that is one of the main reasons I got them, I always liked the shadows from the kessils but did not want to pay for them haha I think it looks a lot more natural with the shadows.

Fish Folk
So, I'm not really "in love" with either of the designs below. This represents an evolution of a 40 breeder from initial set up for breeding Auratus (Golden Mbunas) to breeding Firemouth Cichlids, and then Electric Blue Acaras. It is a Breeder tank for us . . . so we let the algae go. We dumped a lot of crushed coral in. At first, it was kind of separated, but over time, it all mixes together into a speckled substrate. We use sea shells . . . for structure, but also because it adds a bit of minerals back into the water (our water is really, really soft). We gather shells out on Shackleford Banks, NC, and then wash off with Clorox and treat with generous amounts of dechlorinator (e.g. an entire bottle of Prime) and then air dry before rinsing again. Wisteria is our one-size-fits-all plant. Pothos roots dangle to suck up a bit more nitrate. Edited April 17, 2021 by Fish Folk
