  1. I have this really hard green spot algae in my aquarium and also hair algae growing on my seiryu stone. The hair algae I am relatively ok with but how do I scrub off green spot algae? I've tried scrubbing it off but it does not get off at all. The bow front prevents me from using a razor to try and scratch it off. Is there any tool I can use to help get rid of it? The photo is an older photo of my tank when I first set it up and diatoms were growing.
  2. I have a fluval 2.0 light thats on for 8 hours a day. It also gets some sunlight on the front panel for about an hour. The fluval 2.0 is at 100% intensity because it is a relatively small light for the tank itself. Oh ok, just making sure because I haven't noticed meltoff like this before. Also the plants just barely seemed to be surviving like the Madagascar lace. Not too sure though. I'll definitely keep an eye on it.
  3. I have a 65-gallon corner aquarium that is aquascaped and planted as well. It has been set up for about 3 months now. I planted a bunch of valisneria spiralis in the background along with a Madagascar lace, crinum callimustratum, crypts, amazon sword, and lilys (tiger lotus and red dwarf lily). Along with this, I have anubias, buce, and moss. The buce and anubias is doing really well. However, it seems the plants in the background are struggling. I have shrimp king shrimp soil mixed with some uns controsoil for the background plants. I also put seachem flourish rootabs for the plants as well. The valisneria melted off but they still have these shorter leaves that are doing well. The Madagascar lace is seeming to struggle as it only puts out 3-4 leaves max, the lilies aren't seeming to do that well either as many of their leaves melt off. Why are my plants struggling? Should I try to increase the lighting? I noticed that I have a lot of diatoms and some green spot algae. Is there any way I can bring things back into balance and also have healthy growing plants? Details on the tank: Ammonia- 0pp, Nitrite- 0ppm Nitrate- 20ppm Stocking: - 5 angelfish - 15 duplicareus corydoras - 6 otocinculus catfish - 12 praecox rainbowfish - 3 five-banded barbs Photo of the tank
  4. That's interesting, I'll keep an eye on it and start a second culture just to be safe. As for growth, what is the average amount of time it takes for a small grindal worm to grow to adult size?
  5. I'll continue using dog kibble for now but I heard they are a main contributor to introducing mites into your colony! I'm not too sure if this is true but hoping that it is not. I've heard people microwave the dog kibble before hand or just keep them in the freezer. Are these methods reliable or even safe to do?
  6. I recently got a grindal worm culture and accidentally killed off the adults because I put a piece of filter floss on the only small ventilation hole which sadly suffocated most of the adults. Luckily, they left behind a lot of baby grindal worms and there seem to be thousands of them. They are doing well and seem to constantly be moving and eating the food I put in the container. However, I need to feed some fish that depend on these live foods like Elassoma Gilberti so I was wondering how long it takes for baby grindal worms to grow to adult size. Would it take longer than a week? Are there any processes to make them grow faster?
  7. Hi everyone! Being that it is now starting to get warmer up in California, I wanted to try and breed some pygmy sunfish outside! I've ordered a couple that should be coming around the middle of May. I've set up my tub with marginal plants like elephant ear taro and other emersed-grown aquatic plants like hydrocotyle leucocephala and ludgiwia. Along with that, I have floaters like frogbit, water lettuce, and duckweed (unintentionally). I'm even trying some plants underwater like ludgiwia repens and rotala. Would this setup be sufficient to breed a colony of pygmy sunfish? The tub is deeper and doesn't have too much surface area on the top. Also, I put the tub into a pretty highly shaded area where it only gets direct sunlight for 2 hours. Should I reposition the tub in order to get more light? How many hours would be sufficient to grow plants? Also, what other aquatic plants should I add as I want to create a densely planted tub for the pygmy sunfish? I know of hornwort and guppy grass, but are there any other options? Lastly, I really wanted to try other fish as well with the elassoma since the tub is probably 30 gallons and the tub is about 3 feet deep. I wanted to try some top dwellers but don't know which ones would leave the elassoma fry alone. I was thinking of either endlers, guppies, clown killfish, ricefish, or possibly some other species. Maybe even shrimp! What are your suggestions? What are your expeirences with pygmy sunfish? Have you guys tried pgymy sunfish with other species?
  8. I wanted to do a couple angelfish in my 40 breeder and was possibly thinking of keeping a pair. It is an aquascaped tank with 10 black emporer tetras, 7 longfin bronze corydoras, 4 kuhli loaches, some amano shrimp, and a million trumpet snails. Lots of plants and harscape so I was just wondering if a pair or two of angelfish would work in this tank?
  9. Thank you so much!!! I was actually trying to catch one of the apistos in that cave.Saw one of the macmasteri enter the cave but I guess it didn’t like the camera haha. Of Course! My PH is 7.5 (which is high for these fish but my tap water is around 7.8-8.0). Ammonia: 0 ppm, Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate: 30 ppm I don’t measure GH and KH. Feel free to ask me for any other parameters if I forgot some
  10. Finally got the chance to make a video on this tank! Please check it out and let me know if you enjoyed it!
  11. I had the opportunity to set up this 29 gallon aquarium on Sunday and this tank is looking great so far. Lots of botanicals like seed pods and leaves. The fish seem really happy but the ph is still really high. My ph is around 7.6 which I would like to lower. I use rainwater and RO water as well. Hopefully the ph will lower eventually with all of the botanicals. My apistogramma macmasteri are very skittish but I added them on Tuesday. I currently have a trio of the macmasteri. Along with this, I added 6 psuedomugil luminatis to hopefully act as dithers and hopefully, they'll breed in the tank. I recently made an instagram to record what happens in this tank, if you're interested, give me a follow at @planted.botanicals.
  12. I am looking for a natural colored, fine sand for my 29 gallon aquarium. I've seen play sand but I'm not sure if its fine. The bags in store aren't clear so I'm not too sure if they're fine. If anyone has experience using this sand, please let me know what you think of it or if its a good sand to use.
  13. I am setting up a 29 gallon blackwater tank that will have a pair of macmasteri apistos. I'm planning on have really fine sand, anubias, java fern, amazon swords, driftwood, pebbles, and botanicals. However, I really want to have a school of corys in the tank and I've been wanting adolfois or duplicareus. Any experience on which would do better in a blackwater setup? The tank won't be strictly black water but it will have a tint to the water. Which would be easier to breed?
  14. I am thinking of getting an RO system in order to breed some South American fish and I've seen that a lot of people use RO systems. Do people have to remineralize the water as well?
  15. I currently have a 20 gallon pond that has about 30 tricolor ricefish. It has some water lettuce and I am planning on adding some underwater plants like ludgiwia and rotala. Also thinking of adding a lily of some sort. However, I've noticed that the ricefish have started breeding and I was interested in adding some shrimp like blue dreams or red cherry shrimp. Will the shrimp eat the eggs? Can I establish a colony of both ricefish and shrimp in the same pond or will the shrimp end up eating all the ricefish eggs?
  16. That's a great point. I forgot to mention that the pond is relatively deep, about 2 feet deep so would ricefish do better with deeper ponds? The pot I have doesn't have the most surface are on the top but it is relatively deep which is why I'm planning on having a lily
  17. I totally agree with you on the guppies having to be a nice strain. I've noticed that people usually have pretty specific preferences on fish like guppies
  18. I am having such a hard time trying to figure out what fish to keep in my outdoor tub. It is a 15-20 gallon pot that I'm using as a pond. It will be planted with marginals and underwater plants like lillies and guppy grass. I know that I want to keep some blue shrimp in the tub but I just can't decide whether to keep ricefish or guppies. I live in California so its practically hot all the time and keeping both species outdoors wouldn't be a problem. If you were able to keep either species outdoors, which would you pick and why? I am also keeping in mind breeding for profit as I would like to sell the fish rather easily and quickly. Soooooo which fish would you keep and why?
  19. I have a 40 gallon breeder and really wanted to try some egg layers to breed in the tank. I was wondering if 1 male and 3 females along with 8 gold lasers would do good on the bottom. I also wanted to do a school of paskai rainbows. This will be a planted tank with driftwood and lots of rocks (if this even is a good idea). What are your thoughts? Will anything breed in this setup?
  20. I've wanted to breed some of the rarer carnivorous plecos like leopard frogs and zebra plecos and one recurring thing always shows up... EBO aquaristik food. Is it a good food? Why is it a good food? How much can I feed of it? Does it work well for leopard frog plecos?
  21. I'm torn between apitogrammas or black rams. They're both incerdible fish but I only have one tank. Which one is more community friendly? Which one is easier to breed and keep?
  22. I've been wanting to make a blackwater tank with red lizard catfish and a couple of tetras and corydoras. Maybe even some apistos in a 29 gallon tank. I wanted to try a blackwater tank but I wanted to try doing something like tree roots going into the water. Has anyone attempted this? I was thinking of using botanicals as well. What do your blackwater tanks look like? What are your recommendations? What fish should I try?
  23. I was really interested in EBo Aquaristik food as many pleco breeders seem to feed it a lot. I'd like to try it out if I can find any avaliable but I'm not sure which type to use. What is best for adults and what is best for juveniles? What are your experiences with using this food? Thank you
  24. Will Gold laser corydoras work for leopard frog plecos? Will they be ok with the hotter temps of 80-82? Or should I try a different bottom dweller
  25. If they're all males, it might just be aggression amongst themselves. I would feed some frozen baby brine shrimp to make sure everything is full and also try to add some females in the tank to disperse aggression.
