    Meds and Carbon

I know I have to remove carbon when treating with meds but can I save the carbon in a container and put it back when treatment is done? I use 2 bags of Chemi-Pur Green in my Fluval 307 and it can get expensive if I have to toss and replace them.
  2. Hey Gardenman, where in South Jersey? Martin's was my go-to during that time period.
  3. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate < 20 (lots of plants, few fish), KH 40 ppm, GH 30 ppm, temp 78-79, pH 6.5-7.0 I will try to get better pics.
  4. My Panda corydoras have what looks like a big blister on their ventral sides right between their pectoral fins. I don’t see the redness associated with red blotch disease so I have no idea what it is. I’m hoping someone in the forum can identify and recommend treatment. Apologies for the blurry pictures. They were moving pretty fast.
  5. I’ve read that they do go through cycles. I’m going to leave the stalks alone for now seeing as how they protect my floating plants from being buffeted about by the filter outflow and the air stones.
  6. Thanks but what does time have to do with it? Do they stop sending up stalks after a while?
  7. I got a couple Aponogeton Ulvaceus about 2 weeks ago. They have been shooting up long stalks to the surface but none of them have opened into flowers yet. Should I be cutting the stalks to try to get more growth in the leaves or should I just let them be? Thanks!
  8. I’m a long-time keeper of mbuna and Tanganyikan cichlids and I just started my first South American community tank, including a group of 10 rummynose tetras. These guys are freaking me out a bit because they’re doing these head down vertical spirals and even going almost upside down. Based on my past experience it looks like they are asserting dominance and establishing a pecking order. I would totally expect to see this in African cichlids but I don’t know if tetras behave this way as well. I would appreciate hearing the thoughts of more experienced hobbyists. Thanks!
  9. I can’t believe I’m even asking this but …. The directions for the larger bottle say 1 ml/10 gallons. The directions for the smaller bottle say 2 drops/1 gallon. I bought the smaller bottle. Can’t I just add 1 ml/10 gallons or do I really need to count 110 drops for my 55 gallon tank?
  10. It should not take months to cycle a 20 gallon tank. If your 29 gallon is still up and running take some filter media from that tank, put it in your 20 and you’re cycled. Alternatively or in addition to that dose your tank with live nitrifying bacteria (Fitz and Seachem both make products) and dechlorinator (again, Fitz or Seachem) and you should be OK.
  11. Yes, I was referring to the Fluval and Finnex available on the ACO website. The Fluval is capable of siesta?
  12. I have a standard 55 gallon. Thanks
  13. Apologies if this has been asked and answered 100 times already. I’m new to planted tanks and I’m not sure whether to buy the Fluval or Finnex light. So far I only have Amazon Swords but I’m planning on getting more. I understand the Amazon Swords are “low light” plants and I figure the Finnex would be fine. But if I start getting medium or even high light plants I’m not sure. I would probably want to upgrade to the Fluval, right? On the other hand will the Fluval be too much light for the Amazon Swords? I understand the Fluval is highly adjustable so if I stick with low light plants for a while would I just adjust the light output down to a level that’s comfortable for the low light plants? Thanks in advance!
  14. Do you mean have the outflow in the left corner and the intake in the right corner with the flow going left to right (or vice versa)? I would think to keep them in the same corner so the water goes in a full circle before getting back to the intake.
  15. I’m running a Fluval 307 canister filter on a standard 55 gallon tank with the intake and outflow in the middle of the tank. I’m wondering if the forum members think this the best place or if it would be better to have them at the end of the tank. Thanks in advance!
  16. When I was cleaning the felt pads in my Ziss Never Clog Air Stones I lost one of the plastic separator discs. Is it OK to run the air stones with the felt pads touching each other? Thanks.
  17. Interesting. How long do you soak the food in the Vitachem?
  18. I’ve read where people say they feed freeze dried food as a treat. I feed freeze dried food twice weekly as part of my weekly food rotation with staple flakes, staple pellets, live bbs and frozen foods. Is twice weekly too much for freeze dried food? Why do some people consider it to be a treat to be fed only occasionally? I feed Hikari freeze dried from the Co-Op which has added vitamins so I’m thinking that makes it OK for regular feeding. TIA!

I'm glad you got legal advice about it. You have such a strong brand it would suck if someone tried to infringe on it. Maybe you could ask your lawyer about at least using the little "TM" on your logos, etc. By the way, I didn't see it mentioned in the article but if you have a registered trademark and someone infringes there is the possibility you could recover from them three times the amount of your damages. Sorry if this topic is too off-topic even for the General Discussion board.

Why aren’t the Aquarium Co-Op name, logo and Murphy picture registered trademarks?
  21. Wow. I have to say I'm surprised to read these glowing reviews. Frankly, I hate the new format and I find the mobile site now unusable. When I'm trying to read about a product on my iPhone, say the ingredients in a particular food or how to work the Ziss Brine Shrimp Hatchery, this dropdown thingie telling me to add the product to my cart drops down automatically and covers half the screen. Now I can't read what's on the screen. Nor can I see the "you may also like" product links toward the bottom of the screen. Oh well, maybe when I get home to my desktop I will remember to look again for the information or product I was interested in. Or maybe not. I get that the dropdown thingie comes and goes but I can't for the life of me figure out how to control it. Is there a setting I'm missing? Am I just tech illiterate? There are issues on the desktop version too. The dropdown thingie shows up here but it isn't so bad because it is fairly unobtrusive. However, now when I read a blog post and want to check out all the "featured products" there is no link to the product page. The only thing you can do is add the product to your cart. Then you can view your cart, click on the product picture and be taken to the product page. Instead of one step to read about a featured product there are now three steps. Four if you count removing the product from your cart because you were just browsing anyway because an excellent blog post got you thinking about trying something new. FYI, this is also a problem on the mobile site. This is just way I see it. Your mileage may vary.
  22. Update: I turned the knob down a bit and loosened the air stones and the air pump is back to its normal sound. Thanks for the advice!
  23. I went from a 20G to a 55G last December. I put the empty 55 on its stand right next to the 20, drained most of the water from the 20 to make it lighter and then moved it. Next I moved the 55 into place, moved the filter and heater from the 20 onto the 55 and filled up the 55 with water pretty close to the temperature in the 20. When the temperature in the 55 was good I transferred the fish and got rid of the 20. I have two filters on the 55, the first being the one that came off the 20, which would be too small for the 55 alone. The second filter is new so I seeded the new media and new pads in the 20 for about a week before the move. (I also got a second heater because the old one was too small for the 55 alone but that’s not really relevant here.) I hope that’s helpful.
