  1. I did this before adding the fish. Our water contains more ammonia than my aquarium water. I make sure to use Prime when doing water changes to make sure it's at 0. Yeah, I was a little hesitant about this number so I made sure we had all male fish to avoid babies. I have 8 total fish now - 4 guppies, and 4 platies. I think that's what you are saying but wanted to clarify. One is Bronco and I can't remember the other two. My daughter named them. 🙂
  2. Thanks all. I will follow the advice ☝️ and report the levels as things move along. And I did add the Quaritine Medicine Trio that the Aquarium co-op suggested. As for the tank, it's planted, though very recently. I have the hang-on back Tetra Whisper filter for 10 gallons. I have a sponge installed for the intake. I recently bought the Aquarium co-op Nano Tank hang-on back filter that I will be used in conjunction with the Tetra. My current lid won't support both right now so I'm making a new one. Regarding the chasing, I do have some wood and a little temple to hide in. What I have noticed is that most of the chasing is between the new fish that have been added. My existing guppy isn't chased and isn't chasing. The existing platy has been chasing the other platys around a bit, and that would be expected. It's difficult to move items around the tank because it's aquascaped. In anyone's experience, do things calm down after some time? I don't like to see some fish being picked on.
  3. We just purchased six fish for our 10-gallon tank- three platys, and three guppies. There was already one guppy, one platy, and three mystery snails in the tank. Two questions: 1. We just saw a video after the fact about adding too many fish at one time and it become a "ticking time bomb of dying fish" due to the sudden bio-load made by the addition. Is this true? Can I prevent it? The tank has been up and running for about 7 months. 2. We have noticed that there has been some chasing, primarily to one fish made by a few new guppies and the existing platy. All of the fish in the tank are male. Why may this be happening and how can we address it? Here is the video we saw: Thanks
  4. I bought a used 10-gallon tank and have been using the old black plastic top and I hate it. I'm wanting to buy a new glass top but do not see any on Amazon that fit my tank size: 19.5" X 9.75". Does anybody have a recommendation as to where I could find one with these dimensions?
  5. I'm going to get my water tested today at my local fish store. I just did a test with my master kit and I found more ammonia in the tap water than I did in my tank water. I did a 25% water change yesterday and a 50% the day before and used Prime both times. That may be why it is testing lower. Hopefully, I'm getting someplace.
  6. I can look into the room from the doorway where they can't see me and are still primarily hanging out there, talking about two. I do have a platy that was born in the tank that hangs out on the bottom. They definitely get more lively when they know I am there and want food. I hate to think he's suffering, etc. Could this also be a normal behavior or is this for sure something's up?
  7. GH - ~160 KH - ~30-40. I added crushed coral a little while ago as it was lower than that. First in a bag, then I put on the substrate.
  8. PH - ~7.2 Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 temp - 77-78 degrees nitrate 20-40 ppm water changes usually once a week depending on nitrate levels. Volume depends on nitrate levels, usually between 25-50%. Diet - once-a-day flakes in the morning. I try to provide enough food so there isn't too much that floats down to the substrate. Turn the tank light on around 9 AM, even though natural light is already coming into the tank. Turn the light off around 8 PM.
  9. This isn't necessarily a "what's wrong" question but more a "is this bad?" question. I have had two guppies for months and they swim at the top of the tank most of the time. Sometimes they break off and go deeper to peck at stuff. I have read that means they need more oxygen. However, I have a bubbler and the levels are in good shape with the tank. Is this something to worry about? I did recently lose one but that was shortly after I added some plants. I think it may be related to that and nitrate levels which I have addressed.
  10. I lost a guppy this weekend. Super bummed. Two little buddies used to swim around with each other, but now only one. I did a 50% water change to bring down the Nitrate and doing a 25% today. I think what I have learned from researching online, going to fish stores, etc. is that there is so much information out there, and a lot of it says the opposite of the other. It's hard to navigate.
  11. @Mmiller2001- That makes sense about the leaching. From what information I got from this video, she suggests around 40-50ppm for good plant growth.
  12. @Lennie @Ninjoma, for that filter is there space for the coral media?
  13. I have a 10-gallon tank and need some recommendations for a hang-on filter. I have high GH and very low levels of KH so I would like to be able to add some crushed coral or another similar item to push up the KH and the PH. Currently, I have some in a bag resting on the substrate but that takes up quite of bit of space and is not pretty.
  14. Thank you. What is the optimal amount of light per day? Would that make a difference?
  15. I've added plants to my cycled 7-month-old 10-gallon tank. I attached an image of the plants I ordered. I used Easy Root Tabs and also use the Easy Green Fertilizer. I follow the directions for the Easy Green and try to keep my nitrates around 50 ppm. I have begun to see algae forming around the places where I planted and also where I attached the Java Moss to the temple decoration. The mico swords haven't done that well but it may be an error in handling them while planting. All other plants seem healthy. I didn't plant anything on the left side of the tank and there is no algae there. I have a full-spectrum light that I use for about 10 hours a day. I watch my parameters closely: PH - 7.2 Ammonia - 0 Nitrites - 0 GH - 150 Chlorine - 0 KH - 40 I also have three pretty big mystery snails. Not sure if this type of algae is something they can tackle. So far not really. Ideas?
  16. Yeah, I'm working on getting the kh up but all the other parameters you stated I have. I use Mini Algae wafers daily ( 3 of them ). With those conditions, they have gotten bigger over time. With that in mind, does anybody have an opinion on how many fish I could stock? I'm still thinking of platies and some other small fish as well.
  17. Here are two of the snails. We bought them at the fish store and I can't remember what kind they are. The third one is hidden in the tank right now but is pink. Each one is about an inch 1.25" long. I have always filled the tank up to the top since we have a full cover but I understand what you are saying. We have had the tank running now for about 6 months.
  18. I'm a little confused when it comes to the 1" rule. I have a 10-gallon tank and currently have one platy, two guppies, and three large snails. I am looking to get more fish but don't know if the snails count as part of that equation. I was hoping to get 3 platies and possibly 4 black neon tetras.
  19. I now have tested my hardness. The GH is ~200ppm while the KH is ~30ppm. Suggestions? I also am wondering besides the 3-4 platies to get what other good starter fish would do well in these parameters. I know the 1-inch rule. So that would make 2 guppies, 4-5 platies total, three snails and...
  20. Thanks 🙂 When adding fish and on water changes what bacteria do you use and how much?
  21. Thanks! I'm a little unsure of the best way to quarantine without getting another tank just to do so. I know it's important but I'm wondering if there is any other way. I saw on a co-op youtube video this week that I could do the med trio if I put them straight in the tank. I understand that's not ideal. Ideas?
  22. Hi, I'm not sure about the hardness of the water and was wondering that myself. I ordered a test kit yesterday and will be here this weekend. As for his (I think his) appearance, there is nothing apparently wrong with him. No spots, deformities, scale issues, etc.
  23. This is our first fish tank and we started with three platys and 5 other fish. It is 10 gallons. It took some time to get the right parameters for the water because we were inexperienced. Two of the platys had a baby, and the original three have since died. It has been some time but the baby who has grown is now doing a lot of hiding and is very skittish when we look into the tank. However, he is still eating. There are two other guppies in the tank and keep to themselves so there is no bullying going on. I recall the other platys hid as well in the last days of their lives so this also has me concerned. I have done all I can to make sure every parameter is correct going forward after losing the starting fish. PH - 7.3, temp - 77, Nitrite - 0, Ammonia -0, and Nitrate around 30 ppm. I do a water change roughly once a week and clean the tank around once a month. I also am starting to add some bacteria after the water changes and have some vitamins I put into the water as well. This is a special fish to the family as it has been born and lived in our tank so I'm worried I'm doing something wrong I don't know about.
