  1. Thanks, I'll check that out. My tank is not supplemented it appears I will have to wait.
  2. I have some kind of hair algae growing on leaves. First, I'm curious about what type of algae this could be and then I wanted to ask the community about what type of fish could help clean it up. I already have ~35 Cherry Shrimp, a Narite, and a Mystery snail. My tank specs- 20-gallon tank Stock: 10 tetras 3 guppies ~35 shrimp the two snails mentioned above I keep the tank at 77 degrees, pH ~7.3, ~50 gH
  3. KH is very low ~10ppm. I have a bag of crushed coral hidden to boost it but that didn't do much GH is ~130ppm
  4. I did the trio - Maracyn, Ich-X, and ParaCleanse. After that treatment was completed I did not notice a great improvement with all my platys. I then did a course of API Fin & Body Cure. During that treatment, I noticed a slight elevation in Nitrite levels ~.15ppm. In response, I did daily water changes and added Seachem Stability to make sure I had enough good bacteria. About 5-6 days later the Nitrate levels went back to 0. However, I did see two shrimp die around this period. I don't know if that had to do with the medication or something else. This was about a month ago. I did find a dead mature shrimp this week. The water parameters have been stable enough for them to reproduce though. However, I now can't find as many shrimp as I did count when they were babies. They have good places to hide as well. As far as filtration, I'm using a sponge filter. I did not run active carbon.
  5. I don't have a quarantine tank. How much risk am I taking by adding cherry shrimp to my display tank? I recently medicated it for sick platys (to no avail). I already have around 7-10 young shrimp born in the tank but want to boost the colony's growth.
  6. The last platy seemed to get better, but now it is dying. Super strange. My other three guppies and 10 tetras are and have been acting healthy. I have had a few shrimp die and I think it probably was that I did have a small rise in Nitrites during my last med treatment ( probably around. 1ppm). It's now back down to 0. I'm still doing weekly water changes and my params are: PH 7.2 Nitrates ~25 Nitrites 0 temp 77 copper 0 iron 0 ammonia 0
  7. It's strange, the eye got better, he started swimming around more and then these past few days began gasping. Now he's laying on the bottom of the tank. I think he will be dead within the next day or so. I did do a course on Parascleanse since I saw suspicious stool too with both platys. I just started the API fin and body cure, though I think that's a lost cause for this fish at this time. I'm now trying to make sure the other platy and guppies are free from illness. In any case, thanks for your help and advice. I've done my best at taking care of this tank and that's all I can do. On the positive side my other guppies, snails, and especially Cherry Shrimp and healthy and breeding. I count around 20 babies right now.
  8. No, it’s been hiding and barely moving, clearly acting sick. Another platy acted the same as him minus the eye and died about three weeks ago. The third platy I have is acting a little healthier but still show signs of being off somehow. I had hoped the Maracyn would take care of that behavior as well but it didn’t.
  9. I did a second course with no luck. I'm going to now use the Ich-X and ParaCleanse as prescribed in the trio instructions (1 packet of ParaCleanse, and 1 U.S. teaspoon of Ich-X for every 10 gallons of aquarium water.) as I don't know what kind of parasite they might have. Any other thoughts/ideas?
  10. Do you have any thoughts on doing a course on Icx-X first after the Maracyn? I haven't seen any improvement after this first course and the fish is also doing a lot of flashing.
  11. I have two snails and cherry shrimp so that isn’t possible. I’m wondering if the best course of action is to do the treatment of Maracyn and follow it up with Parascleanse if no improvement.
  12. The platy that is sickest has a bulging right eye, has been rubbing against some wood, and is hiding at the top of the water in the corner of the tank. From what I have read the bulging eye is most likely because of a bacterial infection. As per scratching, I have read most likely parasites. There are no signature Ick dots to be seen on any of them. All the platys have had some white very thin stringy "poop". It is different than real poop because both types can be seen coming out on the same day. I did get a sample of the stringy poop and placed it in a shot glass to see movement. None was seen. Before I proceed I'm wondering if I should treat them with the trio instead of just the Maracyn. As a fairly new person to the hobby, I'm new enough not to be able to identify specific illnesses. Finally, I have taken great care with this tank. I keep it clean, test water parameters (including oxygen levels), do weekly water changes, feed different types of high-quality food, etc. Is this a symptom I'm doing something wrong or does this happen even with the greatest care possible?
  13. I embarrassingly discovered I had only one dose of Maracyn after putting it in the tank. I ordered more from the Co-Op but that will take a bit to get here. Any recommendations as of what to do? One platy has a bulged eye and they are staying at the top of the water so I would love to treat it as soon as possible. I’ve looked for the med at all the local stores and they don’t carry it in stock at the brick and mortar locations. I do also have shrimp and snails in the tanks as well.
  14. Hello, I recognized that my platys were dealing with a bacterial infection. I know that the Aquarium Co-Op website talks about ignoring the box instructions and following the post instead. However, I'm confused if those instructions would differ because I'm treating with just Maracyn. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/faqs/how-to-use-quaratine-med-trio
  15. The treatment worked perfectly. I applied it to the most affected parts of the substrate and it also eliminated other areas as well. It's all gone now. Thanks all.
  16. I clean the tank once a week with about 10-20% water change. Since it's dirt stratum I can't vacuum like I would gravel or other substrate. As far as flow I have a sponge filter and a hang-on back filter that does create flow in the water column. What I have just noticed is that the areas I'm seeing it appear tend to be the same areas where I sometimes drop in a gel food that sits on the bottom. The food gets eaten within the day and it does not sit for long.
  17. I do have Cherry Shrimp, two snails, guppies, and platies. Do you know if any of these, are too sensitive for this treatment?
  18. So it is Blue Green Algae? Do you know why (which conditions) it appears?
  19. I have this algae on my substrate in the front of my tank. I have Fluval Stratum substrate thus cannot vacuum it like gravel. It seems to be slowly spreading and I want to contain it. Is this Blue Green algae and should I do anything specific to remove it? My current params - Temp - 78 degrees F Ammonia - 0 Nitrate - 20ppm Nitrite - 0 GH - 150 KH - 10 PH - ~7.2
  20. Here is a pic of the whole tank. The plant I'm talking about it is on the far left.
  21. I have a planted tank 20-gallon tank. It's been running for about two months. I'm now getting algae on the leaves of certain plants. I'm mostly just concerned about the plant that is in the picture. About my tank: The light is on a timer. 10 hours a day Nitrate - ~25 1 Mystery Snail 1 Nerite Snail I just added 6 cherry shrimp yesterday I do a weekly water of around 15-20% I use Easy Green, but about half the amount suggested when doing water changes. I know there is no one solution but looking for any obvious changes that I could make.
  22. I have a single Nerite snail in my 20-gallon tank. She has laid eggs on the driftwood, heater, and some plants. I would love to avoid manually going in and picking them off of everything. Is there a fish that enjoys eating the eggs? Any other ideas? My Mystery snail happens to be on top of the wood in this picture.
  23. Thank you. When initially setting up the tank and planting I added root tabs and some Easy Green. I transferred over all the plants from my old 10-gallon tank and a few were bought from About Fish here in Westminster. What I have noticed the most is the Banana Lilies had stayed at the bottom of my old tank with a gravel substrate. When moved almost immediately they started shooting long roots and one started floating as well.
