Kenneth
I'm wondering that if it would be cheaper to get a used tank and fix some part of it or get a brand new tank instead to avoid the hassle. Which one do you prefer when getting a new tank?
Daniel
The best time to pick up a tank is during the dollar per gallon sales that occur periodically at Petco and PetsMart. Often you can a get a tank a little or no cost from someone downsizing or leaving the hobby. This is possibly cheaper than a dollar per gallon sale, but not if you have to do a lot in the way of repairs. I had good luck with both. If I only needed one tank I would prefer it be new. If I needed 10 aquariums, I wouldn’t care if they were used if the price is right. Edited August 17, 2020 by Daniel
Jefft51
I would probably not buy a used tank if it needed fixing other than a good cleaning. Resealing a tank can be fairly easy until it's not. Broken glass is too much of a hassle to deal with unless you are a consummate DIYer (ok, maybe I am). You can get very good deals on used tanks if you wait long enough or are lucky. I just got a 45 gallon tank for $10 off of craigslist, advertised as a 30. I haven't tested for leaks yet but looks in good shape.
Administrators Cory Posted August 17, 2020 Administrators Share Posted August 17, 2020 Really these days, waiting for a dollar a gallon sale up to 40 gallons. And after that buying new at full price is what I'd do.
redmare
You lucky ducks, in America with your dollar per gallon! Being in Canada, where things are stupid expensive, I buy used and hope for the best.
Brandy
I really like the fact that a dollar per gallon sale exists because it gives me a target to shoot under for a used tank. Mostly for standard sizes I agree that new is better. However, I am still kicking myself for not jumping on the $100 120g with stand, filter, lights, heater, plants and discus included that I saw on craigslist a month ago. I couldn't find room!!! By any measure that would have been a screaming deal. I also saw one with SA puffers about a month before that for about $250. Both would have been amazing if I were ready for that.

I am wondering what would everyone think and start planning depending on everyone's answer. 4 hours ago, Brandy said: I really like the fact that a dollar per gallon sale exists because it gives me a target to shoot under for a used tank.
