Trimming plan

Recommended Posts

I replanted my 45 g a few months back. More light and ferts and I’ve seen some good growth and color. I’ve also seen BBA up near the filter outlets and now I’m trying to come up with a plan for the BBA as well as the trimming. BBA I’m planning to pull the Anubias that’s absolutely covered in BBA, soak in H2O2 for 5-10 and then put in with my plecos to eat. I’ll use a combo of h2o2 and liquid carbon for the rest of the spots.

Composition wise I was trying to go with larger crown plants on the right and wood on the left with some stems in front of the wood leading into a crypt garden and the crown plants. On the left it’s some PSO, a red melon sword, some crypt balansae and spiralis, and the stems are a mix of bacopa caroliniana regular and giant and some salzmanii. I have some PSO in the middle along with a tiger Lilly. There’s an A. ulvaceus along with some Crinums and Crypt balansae and spiralis just next to the PSO. Behind the amazons on the right is a Aponogeton crispus red. Now that it’s grown in I’m wondering where to go next. Thanks for taking the time to look 👀! Have fun everyone! B6F01B73-98BC-4D39-8275-7F9A53642283.jpeg.a0766f39750fcc841776f1d8b5285d79.jpegD161F696-2A20-4E4A-996F-68C223A8911F.jpeg.fd3b900a79c69bdce1fc71e9c8ed937e.jpeg8B19BC5B-439B-4305-A9A4-6E40CE14E79D.jpeg.159fc58cd7ac37f0cb2092bfe1fa3f77.jpeg5D80F78F-ECBE-4ADC-8F23-8A9741255507.jpeg.1c7626bb1878906004853fda6f83a513.jpeg5E7B5BBB-7693-417C-8708-9CFAA2CBB2D1.jpeg.2022e32d02a4ccb37d68116733f0dfdd.jpegB39EF631-BBD9-41B1-98BC-A8CDBA1CC7EA.jpeg.a2b1c67ac661136959444210976fece2.jpegE0EEA33D-1CF8-4C5E-8214-41DC3EB6B1E7.jpeg.5107e5409aafd9651083532bec6dadfa.jpeg

ORD 😍 Wow just Wow. Very dynamic.
For BBA in the past I have used betta feeding rings with the suction cup or diy equivalent.  I strategically placed the over area where BBA collected on low light slow growers or decor. I used that to corral floaters over that spot. Though it did not kill existing BBA it did slow the growth. Areas I was able to remove the BBA under the floaters it would not come back.

Looking good!

Be careful using straight peroxide.  Even diluted to 1/2 strength a 5 minute soak is too long for most plants.  A minute or so dip in 1/2 strength is likely enough, although I haven’t done any timed experiments with dilutions.  I usually just drizzle it over the BBA areas in the tank at 3 mls/gallon of tank size.  Repeat every 3-4 days until gone.

I have found that to be overkill, as in your plant cells will lyse.

More effective is turn off filtration, net the plant parts that need to be treated (to keep fish away) or feed fish on the opposite side of the tank, and "paint" the BBA with H2O2 out of an infant liquid medicine syringe. After many, many, many years and hundreds of fish, I lost my first fish as she determinedly swam through the plant at the same time I squirted the H2O2, and the net has prevented a repeat. Wait 15 minutes, and turn back on filtration.

This seems to be sufficient to soften it up so everyone can eat it.

trying to come up with a plan for the BBA

I had 3 areas of BBA on a piece of spider wood (Some here know that I switched to slow moving plenums in most tanks.) as the tank matured over the last couple months the BBA disappeared and I thought cool, I also noticed some BBA on an anubias leaf and as that tank matured the BBA was gone, maybe I got lucky however I feel the plenums is why I`m not having problems with any algae of any kind, actually that's a lie I have a little hair algae in a 20L in some java moss but I`m waiting to see what happens. The only thing I know about plenums is that they work. Thats my two cents on this.

@Guppysnaili think that “targeted” floaters are a great idea. I have plenty to choose from. It’s just a matter of changing the filter flow to accommodate them. @Odd Duckand @Torreyyep, I’d agree probably over kill. I think that pull the clumps of anubias out, treating and then putting in a different tank would be best. I wasn’t sold on the Anubias up high anyway. @nabokovfan87the Festivum, EBA and large Krobia xinguensis would eat Amanos. I had 3 SAEs but a pair formed and they bullied the 3rd he got a wound and passed despite my best attempts. @BuzzDaddy21im using a ugf in my 29 panda 🐼 mansion and have not seen big algae issues. I could not easily create a plenum in this tank. I could try a BCB basket.

Tonight was a fun night. Facebook Marketplace is dangerous as many of us know and I found this: 4E187C21-74BA-46ED-A6DF-637CDDD42972.png.3910710af028081232dbb3c7fa54015f.png

My flex has had a crack on the upper third of the glass for about 6 months. I converted it to a African Dwarf Frog tank and most recently another new home for an irrabesco red eye red tail puffer named Bobby. My wife finally noticed what I was in denial about - the crack was growing and starting to head for the middle 3rd. Thus, poking around Facebook MP and finding this beauty. And no I did not pay 175$. He was dreaming 😴

It came with an upgraded Fluval 3.0 and a Fluval Nano C02 kit in addition to some nice Ludwigia Super Red and a Monte Carlo carpet! So the Bobby the Puffer and the 3 Live Froggies are styling! (The rock structure in the photo was actually resin and was really great but I’m a rock hound so no more man made!).
I put in a couple crypts - flamingo, bronze and green wendtii. I chopped up the ludwigia and planted it throughout the scape. I’m excited to see what the carpet will do with some aggressive lighting, CO2, and ferts. I have some AR and some other stems but I’m going to see what things do with what I’ve put in. Then again I’ll probably get a wild hair this weekend and plant a bunch more around the obsidian on the left. Have fun everyone! 17FABD74-06FE-4B7A-A5D0-7EDC3EF7F4A9.jpeg.5f1aae0383012a6cd243ec923831a426.jpeg4FC01F42-B400-4DA1-95EE-125B8469F009.jpeg.4dd5153938be910a985616d5dd34d077.jpegA337E633-92B9-4B3F-BA90-5E4438A741D1.jpeg.c03eaa6b1cb74957f810611b735ec0ea.jpeg6DC5FF15-F17D-4C7D-958F-FF39136CAA03.jpeg.32ce5d8a1761c3b26543a8c29e4d2ac8.jpeg1F573419-5BD3-42EE-B360-92688F068C2A.jpeg.0aad68fb0dcb75d81ca740d71ba3899f.jpeg0B06E051-D272-48DB-94B0-9AD578797EB7.jpeg.4cec7d5ba9529e1eb3945e0e54f79a9c.jpeg
