  1. I`m curious to know if your substrate is just laying on the bottom on the glass.
  2. Well, I really like a stainless-steel canister filter, I have two Fzone cans a15L and a 10L and the best thing about a large open round filter is being able to load how and what you want to use. (Fzone no longer sells these filters for some reason.) I did try a Fluval 107 and a 207 but didn't like the trays or cleaning them. (I will never use a canister filter with trays again.) Landen now makes stainless steel cans of different sizes, but they are expensive. (Way overpriced Imo.) (Amazon.) Stainless steel will last forever, but a plastic canister will break at some point. Good luck.
  3. A silly question I have is the substrate on both aquariums just lying on the glass. I just set up a new canister filter and checked nitrates after a couple of days and got a 1.26ppm reading. I don`t do water changes or clean the substrate and also don`t use any type of fertilizer, a bunch of plants aren't really needed. I used to have high nitrates but found how to really set up an aquarium. Good luck.
  4. Hi, well I will never use sand again and it looks like you will just put whatever directly on the glass, I did try that long ago what a disaster that was. I`m not into cleaning substrate or doing water changes or all of the silly stuff so called experts want you to do and I have some plants but not many because not really needed. (Only maintenance I really do is clean the glass once in a while.) Just put a new canister filter on my 40B on 12/18 and checked nitrates on the 20th and the nitrates were 1.26ppm and I know in a few months they should go down around 0.20ppm or so. You will get some good advice for the most part just don't drink too much Kool-Aid. Good luck.
  5. Nice looking aquarium, I really like the different plants. What size is that tank and how many other do you have?
  6. Yes, I have seen these but until now didn't think I needed one. Yes, I just ordered one.
  7. Yes, I agree however I did this because I did have a leak when I got water in the lines (No pump working yet.) and I will probably leave in this oil pan for a while. I will never get a canister filter that uses trays, I`ll stick with Fzone filters. Good video for sure.
  8. Just a little update, it's been a while since I posted anything. I hope everyone is doing well. I decided to get the Fzone 15L canister filter because other than media everything is included. Holds a ton of whatever you want. 15L is just under 4 gallons. Both intake/outtake seals were leaking, and I know the outtake had a crushed seal, so I did replace it and the intake I also replaced the seal but still had leaking for some reason. I did contact Fzone and they wanted a video of the problem and I said crap, but I put everything back together today and for some reason no leaking, I was confused. Whatever the reason it was probably my fault. A couple of pics maybe. That green pan I actually an oil pan, put canister filter in just in case, I didn't want to clean up another mess. The canister filter I took off had four trays plus a pre filter but was just a pain to maintain. The Fzone canister is super easy to clean, should be able to go somewhere between 3 and 6 months before it needs cleaning, will find out. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. Be safe.
  9. Well, I`m not sure about that filter, but I like the Fzone filters, and I just ordered a 15L can and should have it Saturday. I was using a HOB, but I like a canister filter better, easier to clean Imo. Good luck.
  10. I have never seen an Amano shrimp give two cents about any type of neo shrimp or anything else except food then they are hogs. Also, no matter what I add to any tank I stopped believing in the hype of hours to acclimate and once the tank/bag water are close in temp. I release into the tank with no problems. (Of course, I don`t have the usual problems with tank water.) Hope you find out what's going on.
  11. Well, I don`t think that would hurt anything but, recently I removed a Fluval from my 20T and put in a Penn-Plax bottom filter as an experiment (You make your own filters cut to size from whatever material you want.) so far, it's working very well. (Air driven.) Also, I use a plenum that's the big secret no one talks about. (I don`t have many plants not needed anyway and my nitrates are usually under 0.25ppm.) Good luck.
  12. Not worth a rat's butt. Something happened to my 10L Fzone, lost its prime for some reason at 1am. I did clean the pump the next day and it was very gunky with that brown gunk and yes, the pump was warm, but the outflow SS elbow was really hot plus the hose also. (I need to test the pump and I hope its ok.) Maybe a new 15L Fzone is needed. I did have another canister filter that holds a lot of media, something like a fluval that I got going and it's working just fine. (I took down my other 2 fluvals just got tired of cleaning them so often.) Also took down 2 - 20T and 2 - 40B and will set up the 40B later don`t have time right now because fishing season is on. Mama always said it's one thing or another. Hope everyone has a great summer.
  13. I have several times, Amano's only and had only one problem (Large Amano's didn't make the trip.) and Aqua Huna replaced with 10 smaller Amano's and still have them today. (Stick with the smaller Amano`s.) I don`t mess around and waste hours trying to acclimate any type of shrimp or fish, once the water is almost the same temperature, I just put them in. Of course, I set up my tanks a lot different than most and don`t have many problems. Aqua Huna stands behind their guarantee.
  14. Thats a good question for sure. Somewhere around 8 - 10 months. Nitrates didn`t drop until I got the plenum set up correctly. (Slow moving.) Nitrates have been dropping as the tank ages. Nitrates before this were 60ppm to over 80ppm.
  15. I switched to the Hanna checkers and find them easy to use, sort of expensive but worth it to me. Well, It's not because of plants. I`m getting to set up another 40B using kitty litter (A certain brand) and like my other tanks this will have a slow-moving plenum - I feel that this is why my nitrates are so low.) There's a 1" empty space under the plates and I also have media there. On top will be about 4 to 5" of kitty litter. Seems that good bacteria is the real answer.
  16. No, just straight kitty litter, getting ready to setup a 40B (Got rid of all the gravel and will only use a particular brand of kitty litter now that reminds me of gravel.)
  17. Well plants aren't really needed for nitrates. I have very little plants in my 40B, and my nitrates are usually under 0.55ppm. Right now, in the 40B nitrates are 0.26ppm. In my 20T I have a bunch of guppy grass and nitrates are 0.07ppm. (This was the first reading I got was 0.02ppm and I thought it was too low.) This tells me that I have a lot of good bacteria.
  18. Not really needed and I haven't used for many months and will never waste my money on them again.
  19. I`m only using a certain brand of kitty litter from now on and it looks like gravel to me. (Light grey to medium dark color.)
  20. I used some type of this and hated it, nothing but problems. (Weird junk coming out of it all the time) Using kitty litter now with no problems.
  21. Where the glass meets usually edges and bottom. I have gotten to close and did cut into the silicone but didn`t notice any problems. It might take a lot of cuts to harm the seals, but I try and stay away from them. I don`t have any acrylic tanks.
  22. Yes, but sometimes it just settles on the bottom. I`ve tried using a brush of sorts but I found a razor blade works better for me. Be careful around the silicone seams. I also don`t do water changes but instead just add water when needed, I removed all lids on tanks.
  23. Thats a good question and I will take a look at that. (But I don`t think so.) No, it's not, the sponge that I have is on an Eheim 594 intake, and I think the fit is really good. Well sir, I will take a peek in your store and look, but it's difficult for me to meet your price for free shipping. Thanks for your response.
  24. I have also done this by putting all stock into a tub and empty everything out, do a good cleaning and put new in. (All within 6 - 9 hrs.) with no problems. I sure agree with this, and I think it's a good idea. Of course, I use slow moving plenums and also remove and just rinse the bio media off.
  25. Thats good to know, but you also have much more stock than I ever will. I promise I`ll keep an eye on it. 🙃
