Wi-Fi plug vs self priming

Would it be possible to hook up a HOB to a Wi-Fi plug, so you can shut it off via app for a power outage; instead of getting a HOB that self primes?

I understand that a HOB that DOESN'T self prime still needs to be filled back up manually...but you can always do that when the power comes back on.

Is this (Wi-Fi plug) an alternate option for not having a self priming filter?

How long are the power outages you’re anticipating? I have my main display tank on a UPS to deal with shorter term power disruptions that affect equipment, pumps, etc.

we had a few short term outages yesterday and if got me seriously thinking about some UPSs.

UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply

I have used APC and CyberPower. Here are a couple of examples at the 1500VA/900-1000W level:

You may not need the sine wave feature that those offer, but it can be nice for more sensitive electronics. You can obviously go bigger or smaller. There are sizing guides so you can estimate the power and time needs for your particular electronics.

This is what I have in every network closet and server room at my schools:

If you plan to create an uninterruptable power source for the linear piston pump you will need the pure sine output.

The problem with most UPS when it comes to aquariums is they are designed only to power their rated load for limited time, usually enough to safely shut down the computer systems. They usually have high rated loads for extremely short durations.

They should work for fine for keeping your hobs primed or your network up if you have intermittent losses or frequent short term power outages. If you are comfortable with diy and electronics you can modify the battery either replacing or adding to it.

I have a separate post where I built my own backup system for my central air pump.  Overkill and not necessarily the solution to you problem, but you may find it interesting.
