Yeah that gives just about all puffer possibilities and a few extras i do love some google lens. Those paos are tough to determine. I may try one of the researchers off of a google scholar paper to see if they have any insights....particularly on wildcard 1

Do you think that it would be possible that there are different locales for these puffers, like with rainbows?

you have to have infusoria available like all the time

I got the go-ahead from my mum to allow daphnia and paramecium into the house, so I’ll give it a shot with the latter.

Small side note: the hobby has to get better at marketing - “water fleas” don’t sound like a nice thing to have in your home!

Whoda thunk it!! Patent pending! 😂

I saw the snails pin up pics of your profile on the side of the tank. Watch out!

i used to read lots of aquarium books. Some of them addressed breeding this fish, i believe some of them suggested that as a fry this is a photosensitive species. Maybe try limiting or cutting off light for your next batch?

Ironically the ones with the most light did better than the ones without. I’m definitely going for more water changes with this next batch. Do you think I should keep in trying glowlights or move to black phantoms?

@JoeQ your snail trap idea has definitely worked!

    Hello guys,

my name is Daniel and i am from germany. Pls excuse me for my bad english, but i try my best.

I try to breed the puffer fish too. Currently I managed to get 7 of him big on the first try. These are now 8 weeks old. On my second attempt, I only got 2 large larvae out of over 300, they are now 4 weeks old. I also feed parameciums in lagre quantities, but i think that still wasn´t enough. Do you habe a trick for geeding a lot, wihtout polutuing the water too much? The pichtures shows how i try to breed them.

  5. Weird weekend. A sense of déjà vu when working on a presentation on the Battle of Marathon. Turns out I’d also done one on the same subject when I was 10 😂. Times don’t change.

I can’t say that shaved legs suit Polo…

But hey, at least he’s doing a tad better.

BNP fry are a cross between the golden variety and the normal one, and it’s somehow really apparent. 50-60% are gold and the rest are a sort of light brown.

  6. Surprise BNP fry. Walked downstairs this morning and found these guys hanging on the glass.

Sadly, it seems that most of my tetra fry have passed. 😕 I can put this down to 2 reasons:

    1) Keeping Cory eggs in the same breeder box as the wrigglers, so any potential fungus could have harmed the fry?
    2) Not doing water changes. The fry in the breeder box did a lot better than those in the spawning tank, and I have read that water quality is really important with these guys…

Some points to work on for next time🫠

At least I still have 2 left!

Do you cull batches (only keeping what you want to re-breed, and euthanize the rest) If so how? If you keep them all where do you put em all!!!

I’d probably sell the surplus (unless they’re visibly unhealthy). I wish I had enough fry to cull! Some danio fry have problems, but I’ve only spotted one so far.

The eggs I pulled from the tank ended up turning to fuzz balls.  Don’t think they were even fertilized, not sure though. Oh well, was a quick learning experience. The cories have been in here close to three weeks. They seem to be doing great. No signs of illness, cruising around and searching the substrate like normal. Think it’s time to move them to the Endler tank. Give them so much more room to explore plus a sandier substrate to sift through.

I’ve been putting small amounts of meth blue in my egg container. It’s brought 90% fungus rate down to practically 0%.

So basically you put the peat into a small media bag, let that sit a couple days then squeeze and leave some of the peat in or do you just leave some java moss over the spawning screen? Also, clean bottom tanks I assume so you don't lose the eggs once they drop them?

I just leave some moss over the spawning screen. The peat always leaves some dust in the tank, but it’s relatively easy to see the eggs.
