  1. I test it with muriatic acid to test the rock it gives a better reaction then the ginger test, than I usually fill a boiling pot of water to kill any bugs on it then just let dry in the shade in my house
  2. @Torrey No the breeder is from Florida. I talked to my LFS and they really didnt have much information they could share. I'll see if I can find any good local breeders here in Houston. I've been in the hobby now for about a year and Guppies were the first fish outside of betta and goldfishes. Had some trouble with wild caught Cardinal Tetras but those are stable now and have replenished those. I hadnt have fish die in a good while and now this came all out of sudden. I will keep an eye on the guppies and have placed the quarantine the fish that seems to have fin rot. Debating if I should treat the whole tank he was in with the other guppies just in case if the other might of been exposed to the same bacteria. @Colu has lots of medicine information and just seeing how I'll go about it.
  3. @Colu they went through the quarantine using the 3 meds aquarium co op recommends. did it for 3 rounds with 2 week breaks in between. Had a female guppy die today too but she's in a different tank and the parameters are just as good, she was there for the last 6 weeks just finished her quarantine. I use different tools for each aquarium I have. They all come from the same breeder. Now I'm thinking it might just be bad genes. I'll keep an eye out and will be monitoring the parameters every 3 days for now and feed once a day until I can figure out what is going on.
  4. @colu they've been in the same aquarium for 3 months nothing changed except for feeding hikaru guppies food. @Griznatch i hadn't thought of that. There is another guppy that seems to have had his tail nipped at. Not sure if he has something that's spreading to others or it's just a nipped tail.
  5. Hello everyone I'm looking for any ideas of what might be happening Ph 7 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate .25 Kh 4 GH 8 Water Temp 79 I've had 2 guppies suddenly die and water parameters have been good, really confused.
  6. I think if you add the plants now and wait for the tank to be cycled you'll be fine, and parasite or bacteria would need a fish to live and since you're not going to have any fish in there, if you have any they would die. Good luck with your new design. Here's a link from a veterinarian. https://youtu.be/G2SMZe3dKF8
  7. I'm sure you'll see different results with the test kit. Did you change the bacteria you add to the tank afterwards? I just went through something similar test strips showing false readings. Sorry for your loss. Good luck
  8. Sounds like a fun way to learn, you might make a new line if you're able to reproduce them right. Have fun.
  9. Thanks guys I did everything that y'all recommended and he's more stable now, got the ammonia down to 0 with another water change. Added salt and will be doing so for a couple of days and will be checking the water parameters morning and evening.
  10. Hello everyone Got this cardinal tetra that's swimming very oddly. pH 7.2 Ammonia .22 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0 Kh 89.5 GH 125.3 Water temp 82 He's already in the new fish qt tank
  11. Thanks @Torrey That makes sense my established tank has some drift wood with Anubis on it that's probably what's lowered the pH in that tank compared to my qt. i appreciate y'alls help. It's definitely helped me learn more about this hobby.
  12. @anewbie thanks that actually makes sense. My qt was a little higher then my established tank, I'll try to get the qt parameters to be more in line with my established tank. Thanks for your help.
  13. @James BlackI'll definitely look into Cory's test strips but I don't mind the process of testing the water. @Hobbit yeah it must of been the ammonia killing them.
  14. @anewbie I took my extra sponge filter from my 10 and it's running in my qt as us the hob filter with good bacteria in those filters. I got it all sorted out now used prime as well. The tetra test strips where showing me false readings which lead me to fail so miserably with those cardinal tetras. Got an API master test kit. Did a 50% water change and all the parameters are good will be checking a few times a day to keep everything in line. Just dealing with the pH that's now sitting at 7.2 I have hard water here in Texas I read somewhere that hard water keeps pH level high
  15. So I went to my fish store I took a bottle of the water from my quarantine tank and was shocked to find out that my test strips were way off from the master test kit they used to test the water. My pH was at 7.8 Ammonia at .50 Nitrite at .25 Nitrate at 5.0 GH at 60 Kh at 40 I felt like I was doing everything I can but the tools I was using weren't helping me or my fishes. Now I know what was killing them bought the master test kit for now my buy something better if y'all can recommend anything else. Thanks for listening to me rant and vent. I know y'all understand where I'm coming from.

Did you run them through a quarantine tank or process? If they have been there only a week they are still getting used to your aquarium. Try to get in contact where you bought them and ask the following questions. Are they wild caught or breed? What parameters did they have while they were with them, including temperature. And ask what water hardness are they typically kept at. I learned all that from getting cardinal tetras and ¾ of them died because I didn't ask the right questions and didn't implement those parameters in my quarantine tank. I would try to keep their tank dark until they fully calm down from all the stress from coming to your home. Hope that might help you with your tetras.
  17. @anewbie I get what you're saying but I still want to quarantine my fish before I add them into my established tank. I'm in Texas the water is hard here and I've read that they're more for softer acidic water. It's something I'll have to look into before buying another batch or just try with another type of tetra maybe neon, not sure very saddened by the lose of life of these fishes. Thanks for your input guys it's been really helpful.
  18. I don't know what it is, of the 20 i bought i only have 7 left and I'm assuming they will die at some point within this quarantine process They've all looked like this after dying Sorry Col train I can't erase your @ @Col_train
  19. No wasn't even aware such software existed. Looks interesting though. Thanks for the link
  20. So I called the store they're wild caught and we're kept at a temperature of 82. Something they forgot to say.
  21. @anewbiethanks I read that aqua huna breeds their own cardinal tetra, I will call the LFS I'm supposed to go get some plants from them. These cardinal tetras were in special at $1.99 maybe they were trying to dump them. Thanks @James Black @James B
  22. Ammonia levels are at 0 Temp is at 77 It's a local fish store in Houston. But once I placed them in the aquarium maybe two hours or so later one started to swim erratically. The first if many the next morning when I woke up there were a few stuck in the sponge filter dead. That's when I started to treat with salt ( Monday and Tuesday) today i started the meds. It's been a little heartbreaking I've stayed with easy fish up to now like guppies, betas, and gold fishes in different tanks. Got a 40 just wanting to take my guppies and other fishes into it and plant it. Thanks for the feedback guys @Jungle Fan @quikv6 @Fish Folk @anewbie
  23. I'll look it up to see what it does and why it's there. Thank you @Daniel
