  1. So we started cleaning over the weekend. My son didnt want to stop til we got to this point! He is currently digging out snails from the 20 gallon and a couple shrimp! We have had dreams of getting this out of the attic for 10 years. We had it set long before kids. About 25 years ago! Kids have found great enjoyment in this aquarium adventure since we set up our 20 gal. We mixed red seachem fluorite and what i had left of eco-planted then capped with pea gravel from lowes and accented with some washed pool sand. Still a little cloudy from fluorite. Would like more plants. Need light and heat still. The goal is to add dwarf cichlids(pisto, rams, krabenza), congo tetras, golden wonder killifish, furcata rainbow, pencil and a few other favorites...corys snails ect. Starting with congo tetra. I would like platty or molly not sure if that would work. If any have experience with this combo i would love to read it!
  2. So fun!! We unschool/homeschool. We use this as a learning experience. Its been really great! The youtube videos from aquarium coop are also great learning tools!
  3. Thats so neat!! I made a sandy spot in our tank. That would be fun to add these snails. I have been wanting this kind. Maybe this tank!
  4. @OnlyGenusCaps I will post an update! This got him motivated to clean out 2yrs of cans in the garage!😳🤣🤣 thats our budget! Mom and dad can contribute more but its a good lesson for a 13yo. More to come soon!
  5. Thanks! Boy couldn't wait to get started . Trip to lowes and tank is filled! Very cloudy. Filter is running.....need light and heat still and the lid.
  6. @OnlyGenusCapsThat sounds neat! I will check that out! We are getting creative with supplies to expand the budget! Had a hob i didnt want to use. I like sponge filters. But i have it so i will use it. Substrate....i have potting soil, sand and gravel. May as well use it as well! My fish list is....dwarf cichlids, congo tetras, pencil fish(poss) golden wonder killifish, bottom feeder of sorts. Son wants a clown killifish🤷‍♀️. May try my cherry shimp. Just a list yet. Working on getting light and heater then plants.
  7. @OnlyGenusCaps thank you! We are really excited about it! Pulled out a cool piece of driftwood i have been hanging on to. Its going to be a slow process. One thing at a time. I want to have planting complete before adding fish. Need everything but the tank. I like your lid idea! I will look into ways to cover such a skinny long opening so its practical for a light and easy to remove for cleaning and feeding. I saw a youtube video a girl did with some chanel trim and glass panels one panel was stationary and the other slid to the side. Wonder if that would work with this material as well. Then to keep it in place when sliding it open. I certainly have time to figure it out. Thanks again for the suggestion!
  8. @SunBearQah thats great! Thank you so much! Glad to know this!
  9. @xXInkedPhoenixX thanks for the info! I will look in the area to see if we have a resource for that! Guess I dont need to doubt the 13yo here! He nailed the sz of the tank! Maybe mom needs that app🤣 Thanks again!
  10. @SunBearQ Thanks! I was looking at that light but wondering how i would put it on the tank. There are no exposed rims. Maybe i could do a shorter one and try and attach it somehow to the edges of the opening? Are there legs on the light however that unfold i am missing? Would it sit right on the top of the tank? For the lid that seems like a great idea! I will look closer at that light! Thanks so much for the suggestions!
  11. This tank must be 25 years old! Got it when we were first married. Hasnt been used in about 15yrs! We are doing leak test now. A few scratches not enough to make me want to work them out. By the measurements (35"Lx15"Dx16"H) my son figured its about 36 gal. I dont remember that long ago. Doing some research on what type if light i can get and i dont remember if we had a cover. My mind is blank about old set up. We had it bc it was cool. Not bc of enjoyment of the hobby. Its much dif now! I am excited about the research and stocking it. If any have ideas or where to look for ideas on the light or poss lid i am 👀! Thanks!
  12. Thats too bad. But better than tb. That thought ran through my mind after i added. I think the owner was going to dispose of it. Main reason i took it. Hopefully i can keep it happy as long as possible. Thanks so much for the replies and help!
  13. Thank you. I will keep an eye on it and make sure he is eating.
  14. Thank you. Still learning this platform. All new to me.
  15. Thank you. I am new at this platform. Still learning how to post, reply and apparently uploading pics😁
  16. Hello from the shores of Lake Michigan! Our family is very intrigued by what goes on under the surface of the water. We had a tank over 20yrs ago because we thought it looked cool! Ha! This time our tank is a learning experience for kiddos and really all of us. Our hobbies are nature, hiking and newly added fishkeeping. I believe we just completed this tank with the exception of plants. But we shall see! We have rasboras, white cloud mt minnows, a cory, cherry and amano shrimp, panda gara. Snails, snails..... and did I mention snails? We are snail fans! 😄🐌💛 Looking forward to learning from everyones experiences!
  17. I am curious about the panda garra I just received frm lfs. It was just delivered in a pair. I didnt want a pair but owner was going to take a loss and offered it at no charge. I took it thinking i would put it in my other tank when i get it set up. I am hoping this is just a spine injury or deformity and not tb! What are your thoughts? Got it yesterday afternoon. Swimming just fine, not as graceful as the other though. https://photos.app.goo.gl/9k2mWEZF6m9W8J5XA
