@MychalaI'd go with a 210mm Gyuto(the Japanese equivalent of a western chef knife) any smaller than that and you begin to be limited on what the knife can handle. If you do go Japanese be aware some brands grind their knives specifically for right or left handed use and using it in the wrong hand can cause the knife to steer instead of cutting straight. Chefknivestogo will tell by you in the knife info if it has a symmetrical or asymmetrical grind(and if the asymmetrical grind if right or lefty).
My last piece of unsolicited advice is getting a ceramic hone to keep it sharp. Traditional honing steels are actually softer metal than most Japanese knives so they don't work on them.
I’ve found that the choice of knives is a personal preference. The knife is an extension of your hand, pick what feels good in your hand and has a good blade buy the best you can afford. I have F. Dick, Sabatier, Wusthoff, Henckel, Forschner and Dexter. Some are carbon steel and stained others are high carbon stainless but they all hold an edge cut with little effort and feel right in my hand.

How much on average would you say a pair of Apistos are on Aquabid? Including shipping
@James V. AquaBid is an auction site so prices vary depending on species and the # of bidders. Shipping varies by the seller, who the shipping co they use is, the service level and the weight of the pkg. I suggest you check out the AquaBid site (it’s free) and follow some auctions, read the sellers blurb on the fish and shipping costs. When you’re ready register and bid on the fish you’re interested in.

@Ken Burke I’ve had good luck finding Apistos on AquaBid. @James V. Corys work well for me. They also come from the same waters so they’ll be happy with the same parameters.

I was wondering how I suddenly was The Quiet Type it’s not how people usually describe me😉

I’m just outside Wilmington in Leland.

I have an Ehiem Pro 3 on my 120. It’s been running pretty much non stop, except for cleaning and an impeller replacement for 4 yrs. I’ve at various times used Purigen, crushed coral, and extra polishing pads. You have some flexibility. During hurricane Florence we lost power for a couple of days. I used a rechargeable battery pack to run it until I could hook it up to the generator.

Jack quarantine for at least week and do a full treatment cycle of General Cure and Ick X if you can’t do the full trio. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing...and for the pics, I love to see the pictures!
@Paul the discus tank looks great... ...the nc water seems like it would be perfect for them
The water here is acidic, just the way they like it.

I use a Python to do water changes straight from the tap. Sometimes I add the Prime (full dose for each tank) before, sometimes during and occasionally after filling the tanks with no ill effects. I think the idea is to just get it in the water asap.

Good choice.

The danios may out compete the guppy’s for food and neither species really likes the water as warm as Angelfish do.

I live in NC as well. Our water, especially in the eastern part of the state tends to be acidic. All my tanks naturally run @ 6.0pH as well. So I keep fish that like those conditions (mostly South American). I also put some crushed coral in my filters to buffer the water some.

Hello everyone!
I really want to get some Apistogrammas for a 20 gallon long that I am setting up.
The only thing is, I’m not sure if my water will work for them? These are my parameters
ph7.0
kh 8
gh 11
Can they live in this water? Will they thrive? Do you have any advice for a newbie for this fish? Also can rummynose tetras and corys live with them? Thanks for your help!
You’ll be fine. Most Apistogrammas like their water warm, think Discus warm. In their own tank I keep them at 82F but they’re equally happy in my Discus tank @ 85F. Good luck.

That's a hopeful side-benefit.
Count on it. The soil works as a great insulator and it’s now on the south side of your house the sun will be in it all day. If you’re concerned about loosing heat during the winter put a piece of polycarbonate glazing over the top. It worked in my goldfish/koi pond in North NJ and it get’s a lot colder there in winter. Good luck.

Not quite IN my fishroom, but definitely fish related.
I recently relocated my 150 gallon tub/pond from the north side of my house to the south side. This matters because the pond will get something like 50-80% more sunlight year-round.
I also sold my wife on the outdoor tub idea a couple years ago by saying I would encase the tubs in a wood frame and make raised flower bed perimeters, well that never happened and here we are...I guess better late than never.
Project was pretty easy, build a box out of pressure treated 2"x12"s, fill it with soil, plant flowers. Done!😃
See pics below. Added the gnome pic from the garden store because I was legit surprised that they made the mold for this guy.
By surrounding the tub with soil the water temps should fluctuate less.

I needed to get better flow in my 120. Since this tank is built into a wall my options were limited. I found the Marineland Magnum on sale on Amazon. It solved the flow issues and with it’s polishing insert all the small suspended material in the water column has been cleaned up. This unit even handled the filtration by itself when the impeller in my canister crapped out and I was waiting for a replacement.

I recently bought a 40 breeder from Petco ($1 a gallon sale) along with the corresponding lid. When I set the tank up the lid doesn’t fit, it’s 1/2” too wide (front to back). I called the store I got everything from and they measured the rest of the 40 breeder lids and they were all the same size as the one I had. I called and emailed Aqueon about this and they tried to throw Petco under the bus saying that Petco was reboxing Tetra tanks as Aqueon. Then I read them the code on the bottom of the tank and then they admitted it was theirs. So it looks like with the added volume quality control has taken a back seat. I had to take the lid to a glass shop to have a 1/2” taken off one of the panels. Aqueon is sending me something for my trouble. So if you’re in the market for a similar setup I’d make sure everything fits before you leave the store. No need for surprise when you get home.

Apistogramma Requirements
in General Discussion
Posted
@ccurtis Apistos and Rams favor the same area of your tank, the bottom, so there may be some chasing. With that being said I grew out a pair of Apistogramma caucatoides in a 29 with 6 German Blues without many issues. Remember they are both cichlids.
