  1. Watching @BobSteenfott’s latest live stream and he basically said if you’ve seen one Discus tank you’ve seen them all because the tank mates are all the same Cardinals and Rams. Discus want warm water so whatever you put in that tank better like it too. My Discus share their tank with Bosemani Rainbows, Rummynose,Emperor, and Cardinals Tetras, Pencilfish, Ottos, Kribs,Angelfish and Cory’s. So what do the rest of the Discus keepers here house with their Discus?052E7B54-0AA0-45C5-852F-BFA7B0E0E256_1_201_a.jpeg.493813fbae1556779059d45dcb809397.jpeg

Heavier stocked tanks do you use canister I have a 135 Oscar tank with 2 oscars and green terror have 46 gal bow front with 6 corydoras a fire mouth twig cat 1kuhli loach  2bristeld pleco then a 55 bp cichlid three baby African cichlids a bichir and smaller but not baby convict

Check Amazon they’ve got filters for every budget. I don’t think your tanks are overstocked.

I have kept angels and discus together many times. I kept the water temp 82-84 and they did fine together. As long as you can make sure everyone eats their fair share, keep up water changes you should be fine.

Ditto this ^^. In my experience as long as the Angelfish is similar to or smaller than the Discus it will be fine.

This tells you how bad I am  about over feeding. I have those coarse sponges on my intakes and inside my Hob's and it still gets icky. I have sterbai, fat ones, and a cuckoo catfish and I worry they don't get enough to eat. 🙂

Do you feed any sinking pellets or are you just feeding flake?

  5. @RummyKnowsMy 120 is built into a wall and there was only clearance for 1/2" tubing on one end so with the lack of clearance and that  I couldn't have intake & return on opposite ends of the tank we went with an Eheim 3 Pro canister. If there was more room I definitely would have gone with a sump. I have 1 Finnex Stingray 2.0 on this tank with java fern, bacopa, water sprite, saggitatrius, dwarf waterlily, amazon sword, pogostemon, and anubias all growing well. I keep Discus in this tank but it isn't a Discus tank it's very much a community tank with Bosemani Rainbows, Cardinal, Emperor, & Rummynose Tetras, Pencilfish, Ottos, a single male Krib and a dozen Cory's and yes the Discus spawn in this tank.

I just moved some juvenile angelfish in to a different tank and I noticed they were lethargic. I put my fingers in the aquarium and it felt too cool.

I needed to add heat, but I don't have a spare heater controller.

There is a work around to make heaters slightly less dangerous.

Use a couple of heaters that are under powered in tandem. That way should one of them fail it would it take a long time for that one broken heater to heat the aquarium to fatal levels. This isn't a fool proof solution, it is merely an improvement on the single heater solution.

Dual thermometers? Well lets just saying I am crowd sourcing the temperature measurement.

Also just ordered a couple of Inkbird heater controllers to see what all the buzz is about and so I can lessen the chance of boiling my baby angelfish.

@DanielI think you'll be very happy with your purchase.

What about water splashing out from air stones? I don’t want it getting on the walls and ruining it. Also, what light would you use for plants without a lid for a 30gallon in this case?

@siniardemThey either hang lights from the ceiling or mounted to a wall.

From test strips this morning I got 30 GH on both tanks.  The 55g has one small plant attached to a small driftwood.  The rest of the decor is plastic/fake.  I do have alot of fish in there.  Total of 23 currently.

I didn't have time to do the liquid test but I did do the strips.

    55g

    GH 30
    KH   0
    PH  6.5
    NO2  .5
    NO3  40

This tanks has been running for about 10 months and 2 months at current set up.

I will have to test the tap water for GH.

Put more live plants in there and if you have a hob or canister filter throw some crushed coral in a filter bag and drop it in the filter to add some buffering. The plants will actually help stabilize your parameters.

  9. I have the Ziss filter in a 40 breeder paired with a Penguin 275 Pro. The Ziss is basically for biological filtration and the 275 handles the mechanical part. If you’re concerned about flow and dead spots and aren’t  worried about spending a few bucks go with the canister. You can put the intake and return on opposite ends of the tank which keeps everything moving.
