Joe’s Notropis chrosomus Breeding Attempts
JoefishGofish replied to JoefishGofish's topic in Fish Breeding
I hope the fry have disappeared into the plants because I don’t see many out in the open. Maybe 5 visible. that’s one falling straight down in the middle of the pic after darting around. I think they must be laying amongst the plants. Here’s hoping.- 138 replies

They seem so delicate. If they get disturbed or pushed by current during a water change they croak? I feel like the simple act of pouring them into the tank kills them. Next batch I’ll dump them into a grow out tank on day 3 or 4 after they’ve hatched in a tank with no shrimp. Then I’ll leave them alone until they can take food.- 138 replies

I turned the pumps right off. There’s enough plants to oxygenate. Let them just be for a week. They get out of the way when a cherry shrimp walks by. There’s quite a few in there dead but many have survived so far.- 138 replies

Some. But many are just laying on their side. A dozen or so are very active. do they need to reach the surface? Seems like a long way up for them.- 138 replies

Well, at they are spawning regularly because I’m a little worried about those fry. I think a lot may have kicked the bucket. Time will tell.- 138 replies

So what if I dump them into the grow out tank now? low flow, low light. Shall I do it or leave them?- 138 replies

Joe’s Notropis chrosomus Breeding Attempts

So Day #7 Tank #1 I would guess 50-75 fry remain. Tank #2 I’m guessing 100-125 fry remain. So hard to count. They have eyes and some fish body structure to them. Swimming is kinda like darting around and then falling to the bottom. The next thing is to move them out to a bigger tank with actual filtration and plants and leave them for a year or so until I can put them outdoors in my summer pond? Or leave them a week or so longer and start water changes? The water has been a touch cloudy today....? They would go into a heavily planted 75G with some Black Neocardina shrimp and 5 Blue Neon Loaches. I just moved the Gold White Clouds out to the pond for the summer I would lose track of them in here but imagine it to be a great environment to grow up in....? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful There may be early spawning activity ramping up with the adults. Subtle colour changes and increased activity. My basement is warmer by several degrees and the tanks are up to 69F- 138 replies

Tank #1. Approx 100-150 fry? Tank #2. Approx 200-300 fry? (can’t seem to orient pic right side up) @WhitecloudDynasty your tips so far have proven my best hatch rate yet. I still feel like I’m going to crash and burn. But there is really nothing to do for these guys until they are free swimming and able to take food. Another 5 days or so....- 138 replies

I removed that blob from tank #1. It was full of dead fry. They likely got trapped in that fungus. Tank #2 eggs have lots of flicking tails inside but none hatched yet. Not all clumped together either so hopefully a good yield. Stay Tuned.- 138 replies

My measurement (1 drop) of Methylene was crude at best. I dipped a chopstick in the Meth and dripped it into the first tank. Fearful of adding too much I removed about half of it (the dye is so easily traceable as it descends into the water..) The second harvest of eggs received closer to a full drop or more. The results speak for themselves. Tank #1 the eggs grew fungus quickly and balled up. There are at least 100 fry hatched as of this morning Tank #2 which had more Meth added and is more Blue in colour. Eggs are spread out and lying flat on the bottom. They should start hatching today. Very curious to count and compare. I’ve done partial water changes on both.- 138 replies

Thanks for the good wishes. This is at least attempt #7 with successful egg collection and I continue to hope for the best. But with only 2 living fry from batches earlier on I try not to get emotionally invested. Just excited each time there are eggs to coax along. This is a window into the notes I’ve kept in terms of spawning cycles I got better at creating places for the fish to spawn and easier to collect the eggs November 29-spawn-no collection December 21 - spawn + 30 eggs January 3 - spawn + no collection January 17 - spawn - 100 eggs February 1 - spawn - 40 eggs 3 - 50 eggs February 6 - 20+ eggs w/tails in tumbler February 17 - spawn March 5 - spawn - no eggs deposited in containers March 19 - spawn - no eggs deposited in containers April 6-7 spawn - collection 48 hrs later lots of detritus Approx 200 eggs 1 drop Meth Blue About 100- 150 swimming April 10 (Present) April 20-21 spawn 400 + eggs. 2 spawning days each 400 + eggs- 138 replies

Well they are definitely all fungusy. But are beginning to hatch in the past few hours. A couple dozen so far. I am keeping them in the dark wrapped in black cloth. Air stone on low. I am slowly removing water and adding RO water to remove Methylene Blue. 2nd batch of eggs is one day behind and not clumped together...yet.- 138 replies

Eggs are starting to clump together. @WhitecloudDynasty does this still look good? They aren’t moving around in the flow. Just settled in that one area.....? I’ll have another 150-200 eggs tomorrow morning for a second 2.5 gallon tank with airstone too.- 138 replies

I could have left the egg collecting container in another full day because the Shiners fired up again and have dropped at least another 100 eggs in the past hour in a container I just plopped in the tank!- 138 replies

Day 1 The Egg Collection 24 hours later. Approximately 200 - 400 eggs. About 1/3 are clear and empty. The rest are translucent brownish coloured. They are in a clean 2.5 gallon tank. 1 drop Methylene Blue, Airstone and RO water. I’ve noticed a couple of Planaria amongst the eggs. I will try and get them out but nearly impossible. 400 + eggs on closer look.- 138 replies
