  1. Lovely post!

Snails are GOOD. Don’t overdo Easy Green. Algae likes it too…

(I’ve saved the following on Notes app)

    Here’s our method for cycling:

    (1) Use a biologically activated substrate like Eco Complete — or, transfer substrate from a cycled tank.

    (2) Use Wood or Hardscape from inside a cycled tank. We buy wet wood from our LFS.

    (3) Use a primed sponge filter already full of bio.

    (4) Use tank water from a cycled tank.

    (5) Buy tons of live plants. They bring in bio.

    (6) Dump in Dr. Tim’s bio starter fluid.

Then wait a day. Test water. Wait until Nitrates are increasing. Add fish.

  2. If your aquarium corners can rest on the legs, you’re probably OK. But if it sits interior of the legs, I fear the sheer pressure on the screws might be an issue. You could probably cut a piece of sturdy plywood to fit the full space of the table top, and stain or pain that as you like. That would distribute the overall weight well even if the tank’s corners don’t come out over the legs.

    Greetings!

Thank you so very much for all this helpful information.
Just one question - can fry swim through the sponge or get stuck in it? ?

If fry are exceptionally small, it may be possible. However, Corydoras fry would be of no concern to me.

  4. I’ll add… this container was on sale at my Walmart this week. It is not good-grade, per say, but it is what I used above. I think I got two for $10. This stuff tends to appear as spring season comes and folks get the spring cleaning bug.

I’d also recommend using a coarse sponge for the flow through handles rather than a more dense matten sponge.

    Coarse:

    Fine / dense:

I just find that the coarse let’s water circulate through better.

  5. I recommend going to Walmart. Get this over by the storage container area:

Then build a flow-through by adding a flotation collar and sponges on handles.

The unit will float, place an airline / airstone in. Add Java moss. Very similar to Dean’s fry system.

When you water change, it floats down and then back up with the tank surface water. I’ve been raising German Blue Ram fry this way. I also overfeed, but the flow through keeps ammonia from overtaking the container.

Another far more tedious process can be followed in this long thread here. My son bred Corydoras Aeneus for BAP awhile ago. There might be a trick here or two… but it’s a LOT of work…

I've been noticing something. The days I use fertilizer, the snails don't look the best. I know they are sensitive to nitrates so I'm assuming that's why. What level nitrates should I be aiming to be below for healthy snails?  How can I do this and also use fertilizer for my plants?

What fertilizer are you using? Do you fertilize in relationship to a water change? Maybe perform a water change, and then fertilize 24 hrs later.

Had you always intended to remove the male or did you see aggression between the female/male causing you to remove him ?

I noticed that the female was spending 90% of her time in the hut, so I inferred _maybe_ she was guarding. Your thoughts?

New toys are always fun. I'm just waiting for the inline co2 diffuser to arrive then I can set up the Fluval 107 I bought the other day and change up my filtration.PXL_20220318_210055731_MP.jpg.ce58c61692a62829267f334a74c2b4ba.jpg

How will you be changing your filtration?

  9. Got to try sharing video links again. Nothing appears to be linked. What an amazing success! Congratulations. My hat’s off to anyone who can breed tetras successfully in a home aquarium.

**my bad** the species title is a YouTube link. Thanks for sharing!!!

I love your Laetacara too. Beautiful tank! Do you dose CO2? Your parameters look really dialed in. Super healthy plants.

  10. I currently have 17 tanks, and do not write anything down. My son got me into the hobby a few years ago, and used to be more obsessive. Here was his weekly tank-maintenance sheet:

The blank row on the bottom was where everything interesting got noted. Somewhere he might still have his sheets from years back with BAP. Pretty crazy how many fish were breeding . . .

  11. Walked into my LFS last week, and behold! They had gotten in a fish none of them could ID. Some sort of Darter. I told them she was an Etheostoma of some species, and they asked if I wanted her. Well yes!

Maybe a Johnny Darter, or Tessellated Darter?

In other tanks, my Banded Darters are coloring up with Spring..,

And my Rainbow Darters are too…
