  1. So I have decided to upgrade my betta Mr Darcy's tank (plus his tank mates, neo shrimp, mystery snail & nerite), from a 5gal to a 10 rimless (with clear lid). I need some advice before the change over ... My tap water runs at a Ph of 8.0 and Mr Darcy and the snails seem to have done fine, though the plants and the neos I think don't like that ph. So, for the new tank, I've decided to go with the Fluval Stratum, capped with a pea gravel, for a substrate. I read that the Fluval Stratum lowers ph quite a bit, like possibly into the 6's, which might be good for the neos. One of my questions is ... will the Ph lower gradually or fairly quick? I am trying to plan this out. Can I stick the fish/etc in right after scaping? (I have established sponge filters running almost a year in current tank). Or do I need to let the tank sit for a bit without critters then drip acclimate them? I've never used this substrate so I am just a little anxious, as I don't want to harm the critters or the plants. Thanks for your patience in reading this and any advice! ~Jennifer pic of current 5gal for tax

  3. I do have some Catappa leaves. Didn't know they could lower ph. Just knew about the tannins. Thank you
  4. So, my tap water has a PH of 8.0. My betta and snails seem ok, but the neo shimp that have been in for many months (since Dec 2020) have gone from 11-13 to just 2 in the last 2 weeks. No bodies except 1 I found behind the tank (I assumed the mystery snail is eating them before I see a body, until I found the dried up shrimpie behind the tank). Now, I don't know if they are crawling out and dieing or dieing and being eaten. I thought I should try to address the PH in case that is why they are dieing or crawling out (ammonia, nitrates, nitrites all 0, tank has been cycled for almost a year). I bought some Seachem Acid Buffer, but I am nervous of using it. I have a planted tank btw, plants are all alive and ok, but not thriving, and growing extremely slowly. Any suggestions on how to safely use the buffer and get my 5gal back to a safer ph. Looking to get the ph closer to 7.2-7.4
  5. I have so few shrimp (maybe 6-7 now that I don't need to feed mine. They seem to prefer the algae as every time I throw in king shrimp food, or algae wafers, they don't touch it. Glad to hear yours are doing so well.
  6. How frequent do you suggest the water changes, at least until the gh comes down some?
  7. I just tested the gh & kh in my 5g tank (neocaridina, betta, & snails), as I have been losing shrimp. The API gh/kh test kit showed the kh at 100-200ppm (8 drops), but the gh showed 200-400ppm (15 drops). I know water changes can help, but my tap water is kh 100-200 (6 drops) and gh 100-200 (6 drops). Should I do a 30% water change? Or is my tap water even too off and I should use distilled or something else? Any advice appreciated!
  8. That's what I was told on FB aquarium support. I just purchased one on Amazon.
  9. Hi everyone, just needing a little advice ... I have Blue Rili and Snowball Neocaridina. I just got the 10 Snowballs last Thurs, and I know at least 3-4 have died since, but now I can only see 3 at a time. Also, one of my blue rili died since adding the snowballs. I drip acclimated them and aside from 1 dieing the first 24hrs, they seemed fine. They seem happy until there's suddenly another dead one. 😔 Plenty of algae to graze on, temp 78, ph 7.5, kh between 120-180, gh about 180. What am I doing wrong? 😟
  10. I bought Cryptocoryne Lucens tissue cultures. About 2 weeks ago rescaped my 5gal. The plants all looked like they were doing good. A few days in there was a significant amount of biofilm(?) White slimy looking cloud laying just above the substrate. The Cryptocoryne and other plants all still looked good. About a week later the biofilm started to clear up, but then all but 1 of the baby Cryptocoryne tissue cultures were melting. Now they are just individual piles of mush on the bottom. My question is, do you think they might regrow if left alone?
  11. Yes, this bonzai trees for aquariums. I did soak it in boiling water initially, then changed out the water every day for about 4 days.
  12. The last couple of days I have noticed a white-ish cloudy film floating just above the substrate (kind of slimy looking). It was just in 1 spot so I used a turkey baster to suck it out. Now it seems to be over most of the bottom. I did just rebuild my tank on Sunday, new gravel and decor. But same established filter and filter media. What could this be? And should I keep trying to suck it out or will it correct itself?
  13. Yeah, it's just your good old fashioned green algae
  14. So I have a 5 gallon planted tank with a betta, 4 neocaridina shrimp, and 1 nerite snail. The shimp and nerite don't seem to be able to keep up with the algae. Would it be to much bioload to add say a mystery snail?
  15. Hi, I just received some plants that I ordered online for my aquarium (Cryptocoryne Lucens UNS Tissue Culture, Anubias Nana Petite, Mini Bolbitis (Baby Leaf), & Christmas Moss). I tried to time it just right. I am rescaping my aquarium this weekend hopefully, but the plants are here now. I can't redo the tank until Sunday at the earliest. I don't want to leave them in their packaging. Any suggestions on what I can do with them until I can rescape to keep them alive and healthy? Can I put them in a bucket of declorinated water? Would they need a heater or bubbler? Any advice will be appreciated! ~Jennifer
