  1. What are your top 3 favorite plants in the hobby and why are they your favorites? Include pics if you can, I am new to the hobby and still learning. 🙂
  2. @Galabar That makes sense 🙂
  3. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea That is okay, it isn't very hard but it is time consuming LOL 🙂 To get my macro photos, I had to catch a copepod in a syringe, put one drop on a white paper plate then take a pic from my smartphone through the eyelet of a pocket microscope. Guess which part was the most frustrating... LOL
  4. Another good method for adding wood (if the tank is not already established) is to tie the wood to a rock using fishing line. Then after the wood is water logged, cut the line and remove it.
  5. @Galabar Very interesting, is there a reason that you waited for the ammonia to drop to zero (step 6) before adding more ammonia to bring it back up (step 7)?
  6. I agree with @Chick-In-Of-TheSea, I have copepods also and copepods are much smaller and swim semi-sporadically. Not exactly sure what they are though. Like @Guppysnail said, would need macro photos/video to be sure. 🙂
  7. @nabokovfan87 I picked up 40lbs of Blue Seiryu Stone and 3 medium (12-18") pieces of ghost wood. I can finally set up the tank once they get here, which will be super fun. How long do you recommend running the tank for before settling on baseline parameters?
  8. @Galabar Well that is a relief LOL Will see what happens once I have everything in the tank. Not sure if pH will go up or down.
  9. @anewbie yeah after letting the water sit, it went from 8.4 down to 7.8 pH. 🙂 Better than nothing, so I'll take it LOL
  10. I think that the normal 6, 10, and 12 hour modes work fine (still testing). So far it is only the 24/7 light. The 24/7 mode resets if power is cut. It is a minor complaint and is easily fixed by setting the light 19 minutes earlier than normal. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. Has been on both lights I have received. 🙂
  11. @nabokovfan87 All I know is that I love the 'Gold Nugget Pleco', 'Hillstream Loaches', 'clown loaches' and either a 'dojo loach' or 'khuli loaches'. The rest I have no idea about, aside from my current beta LOL
  12. I picked up a 42W Hygger light for my 75 gallon and noticed that the 24/7 mode was turning off at 10:49pm instead of 10:30pm like the manually says. I made sure over multiple days that the light was started at the correct time (according to the manual), however, no luck. I returned the light and had it replaced with a new light. Wouldn't you know it, the new light is also exactly 19 minutes off. Does anyone else have this issue with this light?
  13. @nabokovfan87 Ah okay I was doing it backwards then and aiming for a pH range to hit rather than seeing where the tank goes and then deciding fish. Thanks for clearing that up 🙂 I will have to figure out which stone I like with the torpedo sand (leaning toward elephant skin stone, but not sure if it will contrast the white sand enough) and see where my parameters end up. I am adding bio-stratum and lava rock too so no idea how it will all go LOL
  14. @anewbie To add to that, I know generally speaking most fish in the hobby enjoy a pH somewhere around 6-8 (depending on the fish), 7 of course being neutral pH. The 7.8 from my tap would be fine with some wood to lower pH, while plants would raise pH. I would hope that this would balance each other out and make my water at least remain at 7.8. However, I am not sure if the above would balance out or if one would factor would dominate the other (between raising and lowering pH). My concern is that the stone would definitely raise the pH and make my already slightly basic pH even more basic. I would love to get down to a stable 7.2 or so. which would theoretically open the door a bit as to the type of fish I could keep. A side note is that due to limestone in the area, our water is naturally on the basic side, even at my LFSs. @nabokovfan87 @Lennie Would love your input also: Am I on the right track with my logic above, or if I am missing something? 🙂
  15. @anewbie Yeah one of the thing that I am trying to figure out is the type of stone that I want to use. Apparently 'Elephant Skin stone' and 'Sieryu stone' raise pH and I think GH (I am still learning about water parameters so I could be wrong). Since my pH is high from the tap, I am a little concerned about dropping 150 USD on a bunch of stone that might be too much for the tank. Exploring options on bringing my pH lower than 7.8 from the tap, looks like these stones might make that more difficulty.
  16. @nabokovfan87 Okay, sounds like I would be fine to use 40 pounds of blue seiryu in a 75 gallon tank (without acid wash). Will just have to evaluate my parameters closely for the first 3 months to see what they do. Is there any risk in a pH spike after using the pH buffer? or is it pretty stable as long as KH is good? No need for a RODI for now in my case.
  17. Also checked the water again today, still pH: 7.8 | GH: 7 | KH: 4
  18. @nabokovfan87 Is Lennie's observation above, about KH, correct? @anewbie I am new to fish keeping, so I don't even know what kind yet LOL Since I will most likely make a mistake or five at first, I would prefer: cheapish, easy to keep, but still cool looking fish.
  19. @nabokovfan87 It will be a 75 gallon tank, not set up yet though. I think I will probably be using 30-40 lbs of stone (because of the cost). And also some wood. Will be plenty of plants eventually (over time as they grow out), but the plants might be a bit scarce in the beginning. Will also have bio-stratum, lava rock, and torpedo beach carib sea sand. Not sure if all the info matters, but I included it just in case 🙂
  20. @nabokovfan87 So since the GH/KH is good, even if the pH ends up being a bit high, I could just add seachem PH down solution correct? That would allow me to use my tap water without an RODI. I cannot run the aeration at night because without an air stone, the bubbles are obnoxious LOL but I will resume running in the AM and see what the pH is.
  21. @Pepere No it just comes straight from the city tap. @Lennie @Pepere @nabokovfan87 My tap parameters after aeration for about an hour are: pH: 7.8 | GH: 7 | KH: 4
  22. @Lennie Well I have only been running the air for about 20 and the pH is down from 8.4 to 8.0 (without the seachem dechlorinate), how long should I aerate before final testing? After final testing I will test base water then add the dechlorinate and see if that affects pH at all. 🙂 @Lennie Also what would you say is an ideal pH for most fish?
  23. @Pepere I don't know too much about any of it yet LOL that was straight out of my tap though, and we have a bunch of natural limestone in the area, so maybe that is it.
  24. @Lennie I will pick one up just in case I end up needing it. I do have a Fluval FX4 and spray bar for the tank, which should create tons of surface agitation. Just doesn't do me any good in a bowl LOL Also I have chlorine in the my water (city water), should i be putting the seachem dechlorinate in the water for testing?
