  1. My 2 questions are: 1) If the PH is raised by Seiryu Stone, will aqua soil and plants be enough to lower the PH without dosing? 2) What is the difference between the Blue seiryu stone and black mountain seiryu stone? You would think it would be the color but all pictures that I have seen of the two look identical (could just be cameras, lighting, etc.). If anyone has either of these and could share what they look like in the water, I would be grateful. 🙂
  2. @nabokovfan87 That is a good explanation, I know that vinegar was recommended to remove minerals. Makes sense that bleach would disinfect better though. That is the route that I will be taking, thank you 🙂
  3. @Pepere No after looking into what @nabokovfan87 sent, I feel fine about bleach, was just curious why bleach is used over something like vinegar. 🙂
  4. @Galabar You will have to find some that fit your tank but they are made to cut to size so that the gap you are referring to is covered. 🙂 https://www.amazon.com/Perfecto-Manufacturing-APFBAG027-Marineland-Lighting/dp/B0002HBKHS Could probably find cheaper ones btw, those are just an example
  5. @nabokovfan87 Is there a reason to soak in bleach solution compared to something like white vinegar?
  6. @nabokovfan87 Ah okay, I will have to look at that then. Picked up some Vigoro Lava Stone from my local hardware store.
  7. @nabokovfan87 Yes I heard that rocks can explode when boiled lol I had seen articles recommending the blech the rocks then soak in dechlorinating solution but that seems risky to me.
  8. Thank you everyone, I appreciate the advice. I will look into grill lava rock. @nabokovfan87 @Tanked Did either of you have to sterilize the rock before adding to aquarium? If so, what was your process for that?
  9. @Lennie Thank you. @Pepere recommended some bags that look good 🙂 @Lennie Also unfortunately it looks like I cannot get JBL volcano mineral in my area or online to deliver. Guess I will have to figure out a cost affective alternative.
  10. @Lennie I think I saw MD fish tanks use the JBL stuff. That is probably what I will go with then. I am new to the hobby, so just seeing what the veterans were using 🙂
  11. @Pepere That is great, exactly what I was looking for. Do you have a brand of lava rock that has served you well? Asking, because it looks like a big pain to buy any old lava rock, then clean and sterilize the rock. I know that there are many different brands that are advertised as aquarium safe from the bag.
  12. @The Doug That is a really cool looking puffer 🙂 Hope he gets better, definitely keep us all updated.
  13. @nabokovfan87 Yeah for me it is mostly because a betta is going in the tank; however, I definitely want to get into CO2 dosing at some point down the line. @Pepere Your point about the backpressure causing less overall flow is compelling. I had not considered that. Well that settles it then. Will definitely cut to fit 🙂 Now to figure out my lava rock questions LOL: My other forum post
  14. @anewbie I am sure that I want less flow and more surface agitation. I have never owned a spray bar, so I was just checking here to make sure there was not any negative impacts of having the entire length of the tank affected by a spray bar. 🙂 My thinking was that Fluval may have made the sections of the bar odd lengths on purpose. Looks like that is not the case though, which is good for me. I am just going to cut the 3rd bar to length.
  15. Another question regarding substrate. For the base lava rock layer, is it okay to use lava rock found at a hardware store? or should it be specifically for aquariums? In regards to the mesh bags or stockings use to find with lava rock: Do they need to be a certain material that won't break down over time, or no? Asking because I couldn't find anything that mentioned negative affects of standard bulk lava rock for a hardware store.
  16. @mynameisnobody Thank you, I am aiming for the flow to be as low as possible and for max surface agitation. Had debated cutting the last section to length in order to get as close to the length of the tank as possible. Just not sure if there is a general guideline to length of spray bars. 🙂
  17. I picked up a Fluval spray bar for a FX4 filter, The spray bar comes in 3 sections but only 2 fit in a 75 gallon. When only 2 of the 3 sections are used, the spray bar extends only 2/3 of the tank. Should a spray bar extend across the entire back of a tank, or is it only supposed to only extend 2/3 of the tank? I can always cut the 3rd section down to fit the tank if needed. Just want to make sure before I permanently modify the spray bar. 🙂
  18. UPDATE: I was able to successfully straighten out the silicon seal, looks better than it did from the factory even. This is of course a cosmetic only fix. If your seal is leaking, DO NOT add silicon to the tank without removing the old silicone. Thrilled with how the seals turned out though. On to fixing other fires LOL
  19. So I got the Static Cling Glass Film applied and it went on great, now to see if it stays that way for the next couple weeks. Looks like it was painted on too, very happy with it so far. As a bonus it was only 10 USD, so easy and cheap. LOL @anewbie Wow those tanks look great! I am definitely going to be heavily planting my tank as well, love the way that looks. 🙂
  20. Found this static cling blackout glass film, will see if it works and let y'all know 🙂 Static Cling Glass Film
  21. @Pepere That is great, I will have to look around and see what I can find 🙂
  22. @Guppysnail Okay that is actually really good to know 🙂 I do plan on having some corydoras, so that will work out well. I got a couple pics of them under a microscope, I will try to post here if I can find them.
  23. @Ken Burke Wow I have not seen anyone spray the back like that before, very cool looking. @Pepere When my tank grows up, it wants to be like your tank LOL @Pepere In fact, I don't even know what most of the plants are yet but they look cool LOL
  24. @Guppysnail I actually don't have my 75 gallon set up yet, but I have a 10 gallon that has some copepods. I plan to move my fish from the 10 gallon into the 75 gallon (just 1 male betta). I will be attempting to not bring the copepods over with the betta, but just in case. lol
  25. @nabokovfan87 and @Pepere Thank you both, this is great knowledge, exactly what I was looking for. I guess I will run the standard media for a while to save some money and then change based on performance/needs. 🙂
