    Flex 9 en route for surgery to swap jaws to. 🙂 Seeding some media and a sponge filter in the big tank to have ready for the set up, and shopping for the new scape.

    Doesn’t bother the shrimp or snails at all. Lots of room in there, lots of plants and caves too.

    FYI, you can order the tanks by themselves directly from Fluval if you like the look. I happen to love it and don't seem to have the picture issue everyone else seems to. It is much cheaper to do this and then outfit the filtration & lighting to your preferred set up. I cut out the baffles in the 15 and went to a sponge filter. I don't mind the average lamp in the 15, and the one in the 32 is great. No problem growing plants for me, but I'm using low and medium light stuff only.

    Interesting feedback. I almost feel like another tank might be in order (10 gallon for Jaws) after reading the feedback. Shame to waste the real estate in the 15. Darn another tank! 🙂 Once the family room is done, I'll be adding a 55 too.

    Harlequins are tough, chill, meandering fish with a taller side profile. The copper color they have is very striking against a planted tank so don’t worry about that. They aren’t picky eaters, and do good in wide parameters. They get my vote.

    I want to add some fish to go with “Jaws”, and it’s challenging to find a good match with this tank style. i have removed the Fluval pump, filter, and shroud out of the back to make more swimming area, and replaces with he ACo sponge filter and air stone. Works great. I have hard water and high ph here in Michigan. Current Residents: 1 koi betta named Jaws 2 Amano Shrimp 2 Horned Nerite snails Any suggestions for mid column fish?

    I’ve been off here a long while. The 15g is home to a koi betta, 2 amanos, 2 horned nerites. I want to add some tank mates, and need advice. 32 gallon is doing well. Ottos, glow danios, harlequins, gold white clouds, a bubba blue mystery, one big albino Cory hat I’ve had since he beginning, and 3 amanos. I’ve got some more anubias and some moss on the way to round replace some plants I removed.

    15 gallon tank has been marinating for 4 weeks, and the water parameters have been consistent, so we stocked it today. Kuhli loaches and shrimp are doing great. The neon tetras made it about 2 hours and all died within 30 mins of one another. 😟 55 min car ride from the fish store, and they were visibly stressed while being acclimated. Sigh. Tested the water again to be sure. It’s unchanged from the last three days. I wish I had a fish store a lot closer.

    32 gal Flex is up and running. Everyone is enjoying their new home. I broke down the 15 gal and decided to try some diy by making a cave of pond foam…hope to have that tank back up this weekend. Big tank stocking has changed, and is housing a few residents that’ll move back to the 15 once I’ve got a cycle going. 32 gal: 8 very young gold white clouds, 6 mature harlequins, 2 Albino corys, 4 pepper corys, mystery snail, 2 Nerites, 3 amano shrimp, 2 rescue Mickey Mouse platys, a blue and a yellow sunburst which may not make it unless her fins grow back. We are going to move the platys & shrimp to the 15, add some khulis, and try a dwarf honey gourami. Kids still loving the journey, and I catch my wife in the office watching them do their thing when she doesn’t know I’m watching her :)

    Long overdue update. Just trimmed up the plants on Wednesday, and see I need to scrape nerite eggs again. Been dealing with bladder and rams horn snail outbreaks from the last plant order a while back. Under control for the most part. The albino Cory’s spawned this week, so the kids and I are trying to hatch them into fry in a small container. Next week the 32 gallon win finally get set up. Pretty pumped! Plants have been a fun thing so thanks for the encouragement. I swapped out the pump head for a waterfall style from Etsy, and moved down to a nano sponge filter. Lots of oxygen in there now. The ACoO air pump is awesome. Lost power for 4 days and it was great to run it on eco mode. Only had to charge it on the portable generator twice. Highly recommended!

    Red Racer Nerite! I only ordered one to test the source’s quality and shipping. Little fella went right to work on the algae I made last week in the nano tank. Very small shell discoloration at the center of the swirl, but I don’t know if that’s typical. It’ll heal up fine, as I’ve got good mineral content in my water out of the tap. I should have plenty of plants to add in a few weeks to get it looking good. Going to be adding shrimp one the cover is grown in.

    Update photo. Things are going well, although the water sprite never got going and just died. Everything else has some new growth, and the PS Octopus had enough new growth to spread out the stems and add to the 2.6 Spec…which has a nice algae growth going. I have a new surprise guest going in there this evening to clean that up… Also have some Val and an Annubias Nana on the way to finish out the Flex 15 for a while.

    Corydoras are really digging the double island. They’ve got a lot more real estate on the floor to cruise around. The rasboras seem to enjoy the Java ferns after feeding they went and hung out in a group right next to it.

    Here we go! Easy green in…let the learning curve begin! PS, do not recommend adding plants after the fact. Plant before you’ve got animals. That is all, LOL!

    Well I got a small shipment of the small plants delivered today to try my aqua green thumb out. Overdid the glue on the Java moss. Live and learn. Floated the water sprite in a ring…it was so delicate I couldn’t do much else. Some bigger stuff will be here this weekend sometime. Took out the fake Fluval plant & moved some driftwood and slate into the 2.6 gallon to get that tank started cycling for shrimp. Hopefully the larger plants help fill things out…kinda meh on the transitional stage. Took a pic right after rooting around in there for about 30 minutes. Sorry for the water being disturbed so much.

    Well, poop. What I’ve learned: filtration good, preference rules the day if the biome is healthy, this hobby is expensive, & ask BEFORE you buy stuff. LOL! I’m having a blast. Thanks for the replies everyone!

    I don’t know if you have any of this, or a place you can get some locally today, but it’s got both types of bacteria, and really helped me get my tank cycle going and completed. Might help you get over the hump.

    Again, I’m only a month into this myself, so I’m learning from this as much as you are. That’s the only reason I’m commenting. That’s a lot of water you’re swapping so frequently. Does your water conditioner neutralize chloramine? I have tap water with it as well, which is why I’m asking. A lot of conditioners do that so that variable might be leading your mind off track? I’ve ammonia tested my water right out of the tap, and then again after conditioning to make sure mine works. How many root tabs? What’s the Ammonia level? From what little I understand…it sounds like Nitrosomonus bacteria is doing it’s job quite well (maybe over fed with the root tabs and chloramine?), but maybe the Nitrospira colony got reduced to much by the filter swaps or isn’t getting enough time to make Nitrates out of the Nitrites with the frequent large water changes? No clue really, just thinking out loud. I probably should just lurk and see what knowledgeable people say.

    I see. Can I just gift it to someone on here then? I decided to hide extra ceramic media bags and filter floss in the rear flex compartments to use for tank starting, a quarantine tank, and being able to help someone get going down the road.

    I’m brand new and not a chemist, but your test tube pic and timeline seems strange. I notice you didn’t mention how much water you’re changing in your posts, but that seems like an important data point.

    Exactly he kids of information I was looking for. Thank you! Is there a trading section on here? I see these trader feedback things under user names. I’m thinking that “medium” is definitely not going to be a size I like. It would be nice to pass it on to someone who’s needs it fits better.

    Ironically I just ordered some Java moss, Anubias Nana, and Water Sprite from AC like 10 minutes ago. Figured what the heck, gotta start sometime.

    That upright birch is really original. I like it. Wonder if supergluing it to the tank might have sped up the set up?

    I wanted to use a supplemental sponge filter with an air stone for my tanks. Two main reasons: 1. extra filtration and gas exchange 2. seeding new tanks I am a new fish keeper with one cycled tank up and running, and two more waiting in the wings. I of course went with Aquarium Co-op sponge filters. The blog posts & vids made set up a breeze, but I think I may have overshot the mark on size vs. purpose. I bought a "Small" for my Fluval Flex 15, based on the product description, but it takes up a lot of space in the tank and is moving a lot of air/water with the Ziss stone in it. The OE filter set up on this tank has great flow already and a multi-position head that is very adjustable. I just bought a "Medium" to go in the Flex 32, but after setting the small up in the 15 today I am thinking I've purchased 2 oversized set ups. My question is essentially this...when you are using these in addition to a good primary filter, should you be going down a size or maybe even two from the recommendations on the website? Is there even more to consider if they are or will be planted tanks (CO2 diffusion)? Thank you for taking the time to read, and I apologize if this is an FAQ that I just couldn't find.

    I have pretty high PH that hovers near 8, so I was kind of worried about the Kuhli's (really interesting body and coloring). Of course my LFS has the same type of water and sells them so I may be overthinking it. Amano shrimp definitely an option.
