Gamegurl
Hi gang, I got some new plants yesterday and decided to get some moss. I have never ordered moss before and expected maybe a sheet of moss, what I got is a bunch of 1-4 inch long strands. Is this how it usually comes? Do I just cram it together and tie it to something? Could I grow it in a bucket of water and let it form a mat? Not sure what to do with this stuff and don't want it ganking up my tanks. Thanks GG
xXInkedPhoenixX
What kind of moss do you know? I recently dry started a tank with Java Moss. I had a piece of spiderwood, chopped upthe long strands you speak of, placed it in the tank and kept plastic wrap over it spraying it every day until the tank was ready. The small bits over that time had attached themselves to the wood for a tree. You can also do this to rocks or other harsdscape. Doesn't have to be started in a tank you can do that in another container until the object is ready.
Gamegurl
It's Christmas Moss. I like that idea, thanks.
Martin
There are a few options: 1. Tie it to some other decor such as wood and let it grow. 2. Make a moss wall or "lawn" by using a nylon mesh that it can grown on. 3. I make vines out of susswassertang, but java moss should work out just fine as well. If you follow this tutorial, it should work like a charm:

The main thing is to chop it up. I just use scissors and cut it into 1/4" lengths. Then I attach it where I wish on something like this....
Gamegurl
I borrowed Martin's idea and modified it. I took a length of airline tubing and split one side wedging moss in there and then wrapped the tubing in moss, tied it in place then used a tubing suction cup to stick it to the side of my tank to let it grow. Thanks to all of you. Will post a pic tomorrow.
Chick-In-Of-TheSea
An alternative to glue which dries white is thread. Looks like this. (I did use one dab of gel superglue to secure the end of the thread after I finished wrapping the driftwood). Thread is used often by MD Fishtanks on YouTube. Gamegurl
Thanks for your suggestion. I have used crazy glue and thread to attach other plants. I used thread to secure the Christmas Moss to the airline tube. I need to get some more thread. What kind of Moss are you using in that picture? They have Flame Moss and Java Moss as well. We'll see if I can get this to grow into some nice strand. The brownish stuff is roots?
Martin
@Gamegurl I can't wait to see how that vine grows out! I like to keep a somewhat tidy tank, so using stuff like the various mosses and susswassertang can drive me nuts due to all the "shedding" they do, but I love their look so much! rockfisher
this one is moss as ground cover trees made from mossthe last 2 there is a maten filter over an UGF grate and moss over the matten. I like to use thread instead of glue because the growth is slower on those spots and the moss around that area becomes brittle and breaks off around that area. I didn’t show a wall but moss walls are cool
