Darth Mollusk
I have a 29 G with driftwood emerging from the tank (only a couple inches, if that). I love the look, but was wondering if anybody's ever had issues with driftwood breaking from the water? The snail and moss-covered hobbit house aren't relevant. I just like them.
Guppysnail
I used to have emergent wood breaking the water surface and some extending quite a ways out of the water many moons ago. I never had too many issues. A few times something akin to fungus or mold would start on the part just a bit above the water line. I just wiped it off then I moistened cotton balls lightly with grocery store bought hydrogen peroxide and dabbed it on to kill off whatever it was. Occasionally over the more humid summer months it would come back so I would repeat the process. I love the look of wood coming out of the water. It’s very peaceful. 1
Biotope Biologist
My driftwood is a planter for my plants so almost half of it sticks out. Never had any issues. I do get mold on one part of it every once in awhile. Just your common white fuzzy stuff. Otherwise my fish love it and my fry don’t leave it’s area. Creates a feeling of safety 2
IanB
Most of my scapes have wood breaking the surface. I’ve never had any issues. 1

Cheryl P.
@IanB Those tanks are beautiful! I wish I could do open top tanks. I have a too curious cat that likes to play in tank water 😏

IanB
Can work with rocks, too, though more difficult imo. I miss these shallow tanks (current one is a 75g high tech Amazon basin scape full of Echinodorus species for plants and Leopoldi angels and cardinal tetras as the main fish. Can’t go shallow with the angels… Edited June 21, 2022 by IanB Fixing typo
