So, NERMs, a kind of fatal error: if you buy cheap tubs pieced together in sections, beware that sub-zero temps will find you out…

Today, I got a 40-gal stock tank at T-Supply. Planning to invest in another one by spring…

Now… in other news… there’s been a cat-adoption in the ‘hood this past fall. My neighbor too pity on a long-haired tabby who is rather without fear.

I think  we may need to DIY some clever chicken wire covers!

Oh no on your smaller tubs! I hope the others will be okay.

Want to do a Guppy swap at the end of the season? I can send you a starter pack, and visa versa?

Sorry I just saw this! I am on the fence about raising more guppies in summer 2023--I think I may limit my tub to koi swordtails.

I had a mystery illness in my female guppy tank and don't want to risk passing any of them on. I've had to declare their tank a dead end. So I can only raise more guppies if I set up another tank and I'm not sure I'll do that. The temptation is strong when I look back at the photos of my pretty mutt boys, for sure.

Pre-tubbing season is upon us. Got 2x 40-gal stock tanks to replace the faux oak barrel tubs that ice cracked this past winter…

This summer, I am planning on trying out X. helleri. I haven’t had red brick swordtails since I was a kid…

Your tree is gorgeous and so are those guppies! I admire those 40 gallon tubs, too. I've been thinking of adding one in front of my 110g as I know how much the fish will enjoy the summer outdoors--they are very tempting.

It's guess it's time for me to go clean out my pond and gear up for the season!

Checking the tubs for larvae. If bugs can thrive, fish can too. Water temperature still dipping into the 40s overnight. About 1-week out from adding plants, and 1-month away from adding fish. The middle tub is newest. Hard to find a lot of larvae in it yet.

What temp do you think the water will be in a month?

That depends on your garden zone map “safe time.” For us, 2nd week of June technically is safe. Night temperatures won’t fall below 60°-F.

@Fish Folk I have that same faux oak half barrel. I dropped a submersible LED light in for the fall last year, and float a piece of styrofoam (hole in the bottom, but air current helps keep the surface from freezing). The subarctic chill froze 3" deep furthest away from the LED light, but a hole stayed open all winter, and temp near the light never dropped below 40° F...despite 3 weeks where the high was in single digits.

I haven't seen any adult fish yet (last spring I found a half dozen endlers I had missed as fry fall of 2021), but the outdoor tub has plenty of healthy red ramshorns and some P. paludosus who appear to have thrived this winter.

Can't wait to follow your summer tubbin adventures this year!

@Fish Folk Are you adding any air stone/sponges or going without?

No, I do not plan to add air. The tubs are mostly in partial light, and the planters provide some shade. Once the Water Lettuce comes in and the Water Hyacinth grows, there's a good deal of cover from direct sunlight.

I've tried with sponges and air stones before. But last year we were very successful without.

What are the highest and lowest temps they have successfully been to but haven't had any problems in your experience?

55°-95° F is the window for Guppies in my experience. Some die at both edges, but many live.

Wow, that’s good to know.  I was worried my tubs were already too hot in the 85+ degree range.  Thanks.
