Raeburn
Hi all. I'm shifting to a new house tomorrow and have to take 8 tanks with me. I have bins etc for the fish and I'm pretty sure I'm prepared, there's just one thing I'm not sure about when it comes to transporting the tanks themselves. 6 are barebottom so I'm not worried about those but 2 of them, both are 65g, have deep dirted substrate, around 4 inches deep. It is an inch of sand, 2inchs of 'dirt' and a gravel cap. Do I have to take that out or can I transport them with the substrate in? It's a short 20 minute trip. Any advise would be much appreciated. Flumpweesel
You could probably leave it in place of the tank isn't too heavy to lift with it in. You'll have to be careful not to disturb it to much but I'm guessing it's planted though which could make things trickier.
Patrick_G
I agree with @Flumpweesel, but if they’re rimless tanks it might be a good idea to remove the substrate.
Levi_Aquatics
I have moved a 55 with 3 in of gravel and had no issues. I think you should be fine.
Gannon
my 125 required that i take out all the sand when I moved it, but that was 120 pounds of dry sand. You're case is certainly less severe. But I think there is value in being more careful.
MarkM
If a 65 gallon tank is 18"x36" and the substrate is 4" deep that's like 1.5 cubic feet. Dirt weighs ~80lbs/cubic feet (Sand is more, generally over 100lbs) and then it's going to be wet which adds to the weight. Adds up quick... I'd be planning to remove it. 813aquatics
Those tanks are going to be very heavy with substrate in it. Even empty they are heavy. I just moved two weeks ago myself and completely emptied everything out. My biggest thing would be to keep all your filter media and sponges completely submerged in tank water. This will save your BB colony and having to re-cycle. Also I threw as many stem plants as I could into my fish bins, my theory being this helped reduce their stress/waste damage. I was able to transport hundreds of two-week-old molly fry and every other fish without loss.
StevesFishTanks
I have moved a 125 leaving wet sand in the bottom. It was heavy but made the trip.
