Patient Spouse™ says this is the Endlers in their tank in their room, everytime I come in to take care of anything. Apparently, if I leave the room, they all hang out in the corner, waiting for me to come back with bbs, mosquito larvae, or whatever else I'm serving for dinner, lol 2

Fish Folk
Been awhile since I added to this thread. I am expecting a box of fish this week. Included will be two pairs of Orangethroat Darters (Etheostoma spectabile). The “money-shot” on these is this photo… In reality… maybe one in a thousand heats up that well in spring spawning colors. But they sure can be lookers… To moderate expectations, mine will probably look like this… But an aquarist can dream! 😎 3

Fish Folk
Found a dashing species of Darter while looking things up: Bluespar Darters (Etheostoma meadiea) The blue on the face is as close to the Federally Endangered Bluemask Darters as I’ve seen so far… They range between TN and VA. I’m told the coloration may be very limited to spawning seasons. TN game law is tricky. VA would be a safer bet for catching in the wild. There might be some in KY. iNat info is scarce. Fish Folk
I'm eyeing up Etheostoma fricksium as a possible new addition. The Savannah Darter male turns a lovely lime green, with red stripes. Very stunning... Edited February 24 by Fish Folk 4
Fish Folk
I was offered a chance to reserve some Variegate Darters today. They’re attractive… But they’re also very commonly _hybrids_ in certain water systems. They cross with the endangered Candy Darter. Here’s a commonly circulated graphic…

Fish Folk
Here’s a build I did for growing out Darter fry. It’s doing exactly what I wanted, though there could easily be other better ways to do this. What constrained me was lack of extra tank space, low finances, extra odds and ends… and a fish Breeder’s imagination… First, I had my Banded Darter fry hatch in a tiny 2.5 gal. aquarium with a sponge filter. That’s fine for a little while, but gets crowded fast. Here, I am showing my kids the tiny fry… To build a grow out, I determined a floor space on a cold tile floor that would fit, and started assembling cheap parts… It took awhile, but eventually I cut together a rim like this… Then, after adding a matten and pump, here’s an explanation (cuts off abruptly)… So I finally moved them all in! Here’s two views, one closed, one opened showing how it’s all working out… I also bought a wee little beverage chiller to keep white worms in… Edited June 21 by Fish Folk 1

They will eat small snails. Frozen bloodworms are essential. They do eat Bug Bites crumbles sometimes. Here is what I feed daily: Live bbs Frozen Hikari bloodworms (note: I cut up one frozen cube a day into small pieces for smaller darters) Frozen Daphnia Bug bites color-enhancing crumbles _____ Other foods include occasional live Scuds, live blackworms, live Grindal worms, live White worms, mosquito and midge larvae from outdoor tub… Xtreme Krill flakes, Bug Bites Spirulina flakes, and occasional frozen Mysis.
