Outdoor pond deicers

The times I've used them, they never lasted me more than 1.5 seasons and I've tried 3 different ones. The best thing I've found is to find a way to keep water flowing, that generally slows down the freezing of the surface. A solid airpump with a large airstone (not too large to make everything fight the current) has worked for me in the past as well as having a trickle filter system.

Super cost effective and easy to use! Lol. I personally just use a hammer and bash a hole into the pond, does the trick and give me a reason to go to the pond during winter.

That is my preferred tool.  I don't have to worry too much about aeration because the waterfall takes care of that. If the temps stay in the teens, I do have punch a whole to add water to compensate for the ice buildup.

What type of pond deicers do you guys use to keep a whole open for gas exchange?

I'm trying to decide between these two.

I’ve used the second style before (I don’t remember if it was that label or not but looked identical).  It lasted well for me, but I was using their smallest wattage one for my mini pond.  I also don’t need it for very long since I’m in Texas.  It lasted several years for me.  It finally gave up and I couldn’t find the same style again and had to get a different brand.

This one worked well for the last 2 years, even through the Snowpocalypse we had in February.
