GUPPY92
Hi guys I have a well that puts out 45 Grams hardness and 4.5-5 ppm iron. My quiestios is how bad is iron for freshwater fish? Thanks
Ben_RF
Generally iron in drinking water is recommended for us humans not to exceed 0.3 mg/l (ppm) . Anything above that, filtration is recommended. Not sure how it would be for the impacting of fish.
Biotope Biologist
That is a ton of iron, as @Ben_RF stated that exceeds drinking water by 15x filtration would definitely be recommended for human consumption. For aquatic life it may be deleterious above 1.0 mg/l although i'm not sure ferrous iron would have much of an impact. If I had more time I would look more deeply into literature but for now here is one article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3482709/
Ben_RF
Having that much iron, also makes curious about your sulfur levels. Edited July 23, 2021 by Ben_RF
lefty o
id consider putting in a whole house iron filter. better for you and the fish, and likely cut down on a lot of rust on fixtures.
