I recently acquired a lovely set of threadfins (Iriatherina werneri) from my local fish club auction and they need a little bulking up before they're ready for breeding. So, I thought to myself, they will need an auto-feeder! But, all of the community says they can be pretty jumpy, so how do we have an opening for food to fall from the auto-feeder without risking any fish escapees? That's right! We build a little plastic garage to go over the top of the feeder and block the hole! A few quick measurements, some extra twinwall polycarbonate leftover from making tank lids, and some hot glue is all you need to make your own! I assume this would work exactly the same with a Co-op brand feeder. They weren't available when I was in the market a while back, so I settled for Amazon. I'm interested to see if there's any issues with trapped humidity affecting the food in the drum and to see if there is any algae growth in there. I guess I'll have to wait and see! UPDATE: Immediately upon installation I could see the humidity clouding the inside of the poly sheeting, I drilled a fair amount of ventilation holes in there and I'm going to give it a few days and see if it clears up of not. FURTHER UPDATE: Vent holes were NOT enough. I just removed the lid pretty much. Looks to be doing good now 👍🏼- 7 replies

Hey, I'm getting ready to house/ breed some platys in my 10 gallon! I'm also getting ready for the fluval 3.0 nano thats coming on Monday. My original plan was to not have a lid to begin with and possibly later get a glass lid. But I've heard many stories of platys jumping out of tanks. So my question is, would you consider them "jumpers"? I know all fish jump, but would you especially want a lid for these guys? Or do you guys think its fine if it goes lidless for the first few weeks to a monthish? Thanks so much! -
Hello nerms! I'm starting a shallow open top tank in my bathroom. It'll have a lot of live plants, both submerged, emerged and floating. An aquascape, aiming for low maintainance. It'll be a 10 gallon/40 liter tank, no heater only room temperature. Will have a filter, will also have the surface an inch or so below the edge. My first thought was to not have any fish in it, but hey, fish are always more fun if it's possible! I can't stop thinking about these rainbow shiners. SO BEAUTIFUL! 😌 Do you guys think that it would be possible to have some of them in this tank? Or are they jumpers? If they are'nt a good choice, would Galaxy rasbora, shrimps or snails work? Some kind of algae eater? Something else that would work and thrive in it? Thank you, and happy new year! 😁🎉 -
I am seeing that the Waterbox style rimless aquariums are all the rage in Europe. I am also noticing that they seldom use a lid. I would be worried about jumpers, but it does not seem to be a concern with them. What are your thoughts? -
I’ve had some unexpected aquatic plant successes and wondered what you all have seen. I was propagating some pothos in a tank and got lazy and it fell fully in and I left it because who doesn’t want to feed snails? Lo and behold it started sprouting smaller, slightly differently shaped leaves fully submerged. I have started throwing it into my outdoor tubs and the loose floating/submerged stems don’t rot. I guess pothos truly never dies. Similarly, I took cuttings of a raspberry bush in my yard and put them in a foam holder/aquaponics cup suspended in my pond. They grew great roots but also have fully submerged leaf growth that looks very healthy. Now to get not-lazy and actually plant them somewhere. What pleasant surprises or failed experiments have you had?
