  1. You will love the tubing-it’s so much better than the others I tried in the past. It stays soft and pliable-some of the other black tubing I have gets stiff and brittle.
  2. I like to keep few extra sponge filters going in my aquarium (as room allows) so I have an extra seasoned one ready to go in case I have new fish or sick fish that need to go into the quarantine tank.
  3. Just "Name of school" Fish Club (yeah, I know, boring πŸ™‚ )
  4. I would much rather buy locally-we had a pet store in town many years ago and I was so sad when she closed-she had a pretty good aquarium section. All the useful shops are closing their doors here and are being replaced with "occasional" shops-expensive knick knack shops that are only open one weekend a month. I get the drill bit situation-I can't tell you how many sets I have! I use the smaller bits the most and they either break or get lost πŸ™‚
  5. You have 27 tanks?! Gives me something to shoot for πŸ™‚. Since my hubby passed a few years ago, I rarely use the living room for anything other than my aquarium and some plants. Might be time to get rid of that couch and make some room-I have lots of ideas!!!
  6. I use Amazon quite a bit because I live in the boonies and it's easy. I must be lucky because one of their warehouses is in Minneapolis (not too far) and I frequently get stuff the same day or the next day at no extra charge beyond my Prime. That said, do I really need it that fast? Sometimes (OK, rarely, but I'm impatient πŸ™‚ ) and the choices in my small town are very limited and I usually don't feel like driving into the "city". Example-I "needed" some black aquarium gravel earlier this week (no, it wasn't an emergency but I wanted to get my project done before going out of town next week). I went to Petsmart ( the only local pet store we have-it's 15 mi away so not too far) and they had no black gravel-lots of hot pink and purple, though. I checked 2 Walmart stores with no luck which are about my only options, so yes I did order the gravel from Amazon and it was here the next day (60# in one cardboard box-I'm sure the driver was swearing at me) All my Amazon deliveries come via Amazon vehicles-though they did used to use privately owned cars to deliver around here as well, which was weird. All in all, I think all my delivery folks/services do a pretty good job. I buy things from a lot of different places and it seems like the different sellers are to blame a lot of the time when things are running late. I just ordered some stuff from the Coop on Wed and it was delivered this am by my mailman-can't beat that ! One other comment about Amazon is that the Prime price is going up-it will be $139 for me to renew, the "free" shipping was well worth it for me when it was $89/year, but I'm going to have to think about the $139......
  7. Thank you! I just ordered this kit this morning and it should arrive in a few days (I love Amazon...). It seems to be working well this morning-good water flow and the fish all seem happy.
  8. I’ll try replacing the impeller before replacing the filter. Thanks for the suggestion. I used to always let the canister fill by gravity-not sure when we started filling it beforehand.T Maybe I need to reread all those instructions πŸ™‚
  9. Sounds interesting! Do you have one of these filters? If you have one, how often do you clean the pre filter? A built in heater would be nice.......
  10. I have used Fluval 07 series filters (307 and 407) for many years. The last 2 have not lasted (maybe I'm being unreasonable, but I think they should at least last a couple of years). I have a 60 gallon freshwater tank and use multiple sponge filters in it along with the Fluval. My fish load right now is pretty light-a couple of big Rainbow Fish and 6 1-2 inch fish, but I am planning to put some more smaller fish in eventually. Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations on what kind of filter folks recommend. I've been looking on Amazon and there are so many different kinds now-submersible power pumps seem to have good reviews,( but I don't always trust Amazon reviews). Any recommendations are appreciated! Thanks advance!
  11. The entire sponges are completely caked with algae, I think they need to be replaced or soaked-I don't think spot treatment would be enough. And, I have some large Rainbowfish that love to eat shrimp (I've tried several times-they think it's their special treat when I try to introduce shrimp....)
  12. My sponge filters (3 large Coop sponges in a 60 gal aquarium) have been taken over by Blackbeard algae. (possibly due to some recent neglect on my part....). I'm thinking that if I remove and clean the sponges then soak them in peroxide it should kill off the existing algae? I'm working on my water conditions to discourage it from returning, but it's going to take awhile. I also have a canister filter in the aquarium so it will be OK if I remove the sponges for awhile. How long of a soak would be needed and is there an alternative method to get rid of the algae that you guys would recommend? After I clean the sponges I will tackle whatever is probably growing in the canister filter. Thank you!
  13. New ceramic shaft and impeller assembly coming from my friend Amazon :)I was surprised to see some knock off brands selling replacements as well, not much of a discount though so I got the Fluval ones. The ceramic shaft I had on hand is actually for a 306/406 and the rubber tip is a different shape.
  14. The black thing that holds the white rod (the axle?) (the impeller slides onto it) into the "hole"? I do have a spare one I got for my old 307-I should check to see if they are the same size-quite a few things are the same between the 307 and the 407. I removed the "axle" but the black tip stayed in the hole-maybe the "hole" has stretched out a bit......Thankfully, right now it's working perfectly so I'm not going to touch it πŸ™‚ Thank you!
  15. I don't seem to get any more than 2-3 years out of a Fluval. I will look into Eheims-the filter has to be dependable and I don't trust this one any longer.
  16. I cleaned it all earlier but will check it again. It is making kind of a weird clicking/grinding noise (like when it doesn't have enough water in it) which doesn't seem like a good thing to me πŸ™‚ To complicate it, I have a Fluval UV clarifier in the system (hooked into the output hose) and I can't figure out any way to check that other than disconnecting the UV module and then the tubing will be too short. I'm going to order some new tubing and take the UV module out of the puzzle. The intake tubing is patent when I blow through it, so if there's a clog, it's got to be in the output. ETA: I took the Fluval system completely apart checked the impeller again and removed the UV clarifier-nothing seemed clogged or like it was malfunctioning otherwise, but it seems to be working again. Not sure what actually was going on, but as long as it's working, I'm happy. Thank you all for your input!!!
  17. I have 2 Irian Red Rainbowfish, 5 1" tetras, 3 zebra danios and 9 panda corys. Sounds like a lot now that I add them up πŸ™‚.
  18. I think I know the answer, but have to ask. My Fluval 405 canister filter just crapped out for whatever reason I can't figure out. My tank is 60 gallons-I have 2 large AC sponge filters that have been in the tank for a couple of years and I just got a AC power head to put into one of them. Honestly, this Fluval has been a PIA since I got it (I had a smaller Fluval 305 in the tank before-worked great for for a few years before it died so I replaced it with this one last year). Will my aquarium be OK with just the sponge filters if I don't replace the Fluval?
  19. Thank you for this, Cory! I have a Fluval 3.0 light that I raised 6.5 inches above the rim of my tank (24 inches tall) to accommodate some plants I have growing on the back of my tank. My aquarium plants tend to struggle but I kept thinking-"I have this great light, the amount of light should be fine". I didn't realize the height would make that much difference. I'll be dropping the light back down in the morning-the Pothos on the back should still be fine. I like to keep the Pothos happy because they do eat a lot of nitrate, but they are technically a low light plant.
  20. It may date me, but lately I've been reading in the evenings and turn on the YouTube Music 70's channel really low in the background. Good old CSN, BeeGee's and that kind of stuff.
  21. I will work on this tomorrow-thank you for the ideas!
