Yeah it's getting some extra filtration. Something I'm thinking about trying is having the pipe turn and drip into the tray rather than cutting a hole. The hole makes it a bit tricky to take in and out.

That's a good thought. If you end up figuring that out, please share!!

  2. Feeding less is a great way to decrease the snail population in your aquarium.  Another important question to ask yourself is why are you doing all of this? What is the purpose? Is it worth all the time and money to get rid of all of them or is it okay to have a few lingering snails?

  3. This is such a great idea! I have been wanting to make some fry trays for my 20L, but I dont have a auto waterchange sytem and didn't want to buy a pump just for this, but I hadn't thought of using air to move the water. I think another benefit of this system is that the main aquarium is getting some extra filtration if i'm not mistaken?

*Attempts to holler, voice cracks* 😅

I’m just beginning to set up my 55gal tank. I had originally planned on fancy goldfish, but after going way down the rabbit hole of Angelfish videos, articles, and posts like this one, I’m hooked.

I live in Central PA and unfortunately our water is…not exactly comparable to that of an Amazonian tributary. Hard water with a Ph hovering around 8.  I suppose my question is, should I try to chase better parameters, or just focus on a clean,  well cycled tank?

    thanks in advance

I was just watching an coop video where Dean talks about his experience breeding angelfish and he said that he has bred angels over 8.0 ph, so going off of that I would not chase lower ph and softer water and focus on clean water.

Thank you! I would like to try building a couple of low-cost Illinois biotope tanks this summer. I would like to find some native plants that:

    -will do well in aquariums

    -stay reasonably small

    -are easy to propagate

    -are legal to collect

    -have healthy, widespread populations

One day I will work up the courage to post some pictures!

That sounds super interesting!! And pictures are always great, but I totally understand that a lot of the internet can be pretty harsh when you show them your aquariums.

  6. Some exciting new things are happening in the fish room! For starters, the red head tapajos are growing quickly and starting to show some markings and slight coloration. Their qt is almost over, so they will soon join the 75 gallon South American ish themed aquarium.
I also purchased a betta for my 5 gallon and I have been enjoying him so far.

I also have a surprise project for the 10 gallon the tapajos are currently in. Here are some clues/ items I have purchased for the setup

  7. I was out ice fishing the last few days taking advantage of some cool weather here in western Maryland. Any other ice fishermen care to share some of their catches? I always enjoy learning about how fish react to cold weather and how their habits change throughout the winter.

  8. A quick update on the mini fish room. For starters, all the red head tapajos are doing great! I fed more vibra bites today and they seem to really enjoy them. They are becoming much more outgoing and hiding less which is exciting to see!

  9. As others have alreday said, i think the best move would be to redo the tank and make it something you enjoy. Also, I find that the more I enjoy an aquarium tho more time I spend working with it, so in the long run this move will probably also be best for the fish.

  10. Update on the geophagus pyrocephalus (red head tapajos) after 24+ hours. They are all alive and seem to be adjusting very well to their new aquarium. I fed all the fish vibra bites for the first time tonight and I can understand why everyone likes them so much! All the fish went CRAZY! I even caught the tapajos eating them2060717528_IMG_E45271.JPG.e2bd15fa023bfe36b9d2ebd115d12ff7.JPG

I didn't realize how small vibra bites were until I was holding them in my hand, but fortunately that just means my guppies can eat them too!
