  1. I agree with what others have said. In my experience fish try to keep their colors as close as possible to their environment. I had some tapajos on white sand and they were very light, once I changed to a darker substrate they also got darker. I hope this helps

Personally i think its smarter to go with cash,

that way you can drop of some moss,

    and oh you are hungry?

    use the money for lunch.

or just other purposes as appose to the credit which is binding to that store, as you can only use it there.

That’s kinda what I was thinking, because of the reasons you brought up and cuz I could sell a lot more products to them in the future, so if I’m getting $100 store credit every month I wouldn’t be able to spend it all there.

  3. I have some exciting news in regards to my aquarium journey! I have been working on building a relationship with my lfs and they have agreed to buy some java moss from me. While I know this may not seem very exciting to most people, I am ecstatic! I will be taking them a bag-full tomorrow afternoon. I was offered either cash or about 25% more store credit, but I asked to be paid in cash because I know it's a lot easier to switch from cash to store credit than vice versa. Is this a smart mover or should I go for the credit? I also added 11 more guppy fry to the trays so hopefully that will increase my guppy yield to see my lfs too. But right noe I am just happy that I seem to have my foot in the door!!

  4. Wow, that’s great!! I’m sure it can be a lot to manage so many fry, but it also sounds like you are making good money with those panda angels which is great! And even if you can’t raise every batch of eggs, it still shows your fish are really happy which is  always a good thing! I will make sure too keep you in the loop if there are any developments with my angels. Thanks again for all the excellent advice!

  5. @AllFishNoBrakes that sounds like a fun time with all the different types of angels you have going!! I know Dean also uses his angels to fund his fish room, so I am thinking of trying to do the same thing with that.

Here’s a picture of four of the five angelfish I currently have that was taken a few weeks ago. My favorite one is the marble I the front because of how much gold/ orange he has on his head and because of the cool pattern on his caudal fin. Hopefully he decides to pair up with a female soon, but it’s just a waiting game at this point.

Thanks for the info on the methylene blue! I will probably be receiving an Amazon package soon lol.

  6. @AllFishNoBrakes Thank you! I will certainly reach out if I need some advice, which I'm sure I will need at some point. I have 3 black and gold marbles and 2 with more "natural"colors. I would love to get into keeping koi or pandas, but my lfs had these in from a local breeder at a decent size for $7, so I couldn't turn that down. I also think it is smart to start with some cheaper stock and work my way up.

Okay, I will have to check that out. Is the bottle you purchased 100 percet methylene blue? Because I have seen some that say (x) percent methylene blue and stuff, but I'm not sure if that's what I want or not? Thanks in advance!:)

  7. Thank you for putting such detail into this post! I am currently working on spawning some angelfish and am at the "buy 5 angels and grow them up" stage, so not too far along, but I'm working on it. I will definitely check back in here frequently as the process continues. I love the idea of filling up the ten gallon as the fry grow, because it seems to not oly help by improving water quality and keeping them confined enough to find food easily, but also helps you know how old each group of fry are. I do have one question though. Where do you get your methylene blue?

Thanks @Levi_Aquatics! I must have started from good stock, because I really haven't done much with them! Love the betta in your profile pic.

That's great, its always nice to have stuff working! Thank you, it's actually a guppy, but in the tiny pic I can see how its confusing.

  9. Over the weekend I was inspired by @Schuyler to build some fry trays for my 20L with an airlift system using pvc to fill them. I built a few of them, but unfortunately I was unable to transition from the pvc to airline tubing which is how I wanted to get the water into the trays.

After giving up on an airlift design, I decided to use the pump from an old HOB filter which I retrofitted to pump through airline tubing to get the water into the trays. The water is able to escape through a sponge covered opening similar to what Dean has in his fish room. I cut a piece of sturdy plastic to hold the trays up in the aquarium which is working pretty well so far.

I currently don’t have a lot of fry in the fish room, but I was able to find a bunch of guppy fry and decided to throw a few into the trays with some Java moss and spider wood just to see how they do.

  10.    Sooooooooo, after a weekend of trial and error attempting to make this work with airline hose instead of pvc I had to give up. I was able to get a working czech arlift as the video @Schuyler shared describes, but I was completely unable to convert this to airline tubing in the way I wanted. I suspect it could be done, but I was trying to make it work in a 20L which is likely too short and does not provide enough pressure to get a constant flow out of the tubing. I was able to get it working somewhat, but it was loud and splashed way too much water around while also not providing much flow at all, so I had to scrap that and ended up using an old HOB filter to pump water to some fry trays I made yesterday. This solution worked a lot better for me, but I am still frustrated I was unable to get the airlift working with airline tubing. One of the big isses I think I was running into was that the diameter of the tubing to too small for air and water to pass through simultaneously at a decent flow rate. This being said, I can see a lot of benefits to using an airlift system for fry trays, so if anyone else can figure out how to make one with airline tubing please let me know!!

If anyone is interested in seeing a more detailed look at how I built my fry trays as well as some pictures you can check out my journal "Levi's Mini Fish Room Journal" as I will be uploading a post about that system soon.

  11. Quick update-

I moved the tapajos to the 75 yesterday and they were certainly scared of the angels and new environment in general, but they seem to be settling in well. I’m pretty excited to see them grow in their new home. I also bought some new plants, but the fish store had no idea what they were, so if anyone knows I would love to have some info on them. I also set up most of the “scape” in the 10 gallon, so some new fish should be coming soon!! Additionally, I was talking with an employee at my lfs and it sounds like they are interested in purchasing some Java moss from me which is super exciting!! Hopefully they will also buy some other fish I am breeding, but right now I’m just glad to have my foot in the door!

  12. This has been one of my favorite threads to read, because not only do you get to see some super excited nerms, but also get to see a taste of all their aquariums and fishkeeping personality as well. Seeing how other ACO fans use their new equipment and toys also provides great ideas to myself and many others I’m sure! Congrats to all the previous winners and thank you for sharing your haul! And most of all, thanks to Aquarium Co-op for hosting this amazing forum and for giving out care packages to some well deserving nerms!
