Expectorating_Aubergine
My local mom & pop pet store got these guys in. They say that they were marked as "regular crayfish". The ones they usually have are red and black, you know, the common kind. Does anyone know what kind this is? Google search only revealed that there are TONS of brown crayfish species... OceanTruth
I can’t help with the id, unfortunately, but that is a cool looking little guy. Maybe it will become more obvious what species he is as he gets older?
crushalot
It appears to be a color variant of some type from the Genus Faxonius. What area of the US are you? This genus is common throughout the North Eastern US. Some possible matches: Faxonius obscurus (Allegheny crayfish) https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/22197953 Virile Crayfish (Northern Crayfish) Calico Crayfish (Papershell Crayfish)
Expectorating_Aubergine
I'm in Southern California. It looks like it might be one of those two for sure. Thanks for the ID! Edited March 18, 2021 by Expectorating_Aubergine
Celly Rasbora
Did you ask for the wholesaler's location? They could be from anywhere, not just California.
Expectorating_Aubergine
The guy I asked said that they weren't allowed to tell people who their wholesalers are.....
Andy's Fish Den
If they could tell you whether they got in as a "contaminant" with something else or if they specifically ordered crayfish could help. When I worked in a LFS, we would occasionally get crayfish in the bags with feeder goldfish. Usually they were small and we would put them in a tank by themselves and sell them. Expectorating_Aubergine
That's an interesting line of questioning. I have a feeling they aren't going to be responsive through. The zebramussel in the marimo ball thing has made many of the small lfs around here a little cagey about "contaminants". On a side note I knew a guy years ago who got a tentacle snake as a contaminants in a shipment of fire eels....
