Midnight
So I have a tank that is 24" deep with a large sponge filter powered with a tetra whisper which is anything but a whisper it's noisy and rattles like crazy and I want to get a quieter air pump. The USB air pump interests me but I'm not sure if it will be able to push enough air that deep and power the sponge filter so I'm hoping that someone with experience using them will be able to advice me if it is doable or not. KBOzzie59
I'm using one in 22" of water and it has plenty of air.
starsman20
I use one in a 20"deep 36g bowfront and have to limit the flow with a valve. I doubt 24" would be an issue. The beauty is they are less than 10 bucks so its not expensive to try it
Maggie
I am using one in my 45-gal which is 24" deep. Works great and is quiet! Edited November 8, 2020 by Maggie Added pics
Andrew Geiger
I just plugged in a nano pump in an IBC tote, over 4 feet deep and it pumps like a champ for a large sponge filter Edited November 9, 2020 by Andrew Geiger added picture
Midnight
Thank you all this has put me at ease and because it is so cheap I will give it a try.
Ricky D
@Maggie, what size sponge filter are you using in your tank? I ask because I'm trying to figure out if its sufficient running a small in a 20g or if I should use a bigger filter. Conversely, I also want to run sponges on my 40g cube and was thinking running 2 small or maybe medium to increase filtration.
Maggie
@Ricky DI have a medium in my 45-gal and just got a 20L up and running and have a size small in that, but since the 20-long tank is shallower than a 20-tall (not sure which one you have), I don't use the uplift tube. I do use it in the 45 though.
Ricky D
Thanks Maggie, sorry I should've specified and it's a 20 long. I think I have a medium in it right now and it looks too big...and you are running them on the nano pumps right? I just want to make sure I have enough filtration
Maggie
Yes, I have nano pumps on both.
JettsPapa
It sounds like you got your answer, and I agree that I think it will be fine since I have one doing a great job in a 17" tank. I just wanted to add that I took a plant weight, bent it into a S-shaped hook, and hung it on the back of the tank. I then used the little snap ring that comes with the pump to hang it from that hook. That puts the pump out of sight, and above the water line, so there's no danger of water siphoning out through the air line if the power goes out. No need for a check valve.
