Schuyler
The female in isolation has a white patch on her side. I think it may be a burn from perching between the glass and the heater. Not feeling super optimistic about her...
Schuyler
I got some Xtreme Krill flakes from ACO because fish are supposed to go crazy for them and they're supposed to make color really pop. The killis just spit it out...

My killis did it with fluval bug bites flakes the first time but now they eat them
Schuyler
No real update on the sick killi today. Didn't give her a bath because I spent most of the day curled up in bed with my own sickness. Some kind of stomach bug. Almost every time I look in there she's hiding under the heater.

Schuyler
She didn't make it. She was belly up this morning. But the others seem healthy. They're like guppies in that any time I walk up they will beg for food:

Do you think you can get a closer up photo of a male and female?

They look so good 😍
Schuyler
Giving them each a bloodworm. Trying to keep from overfeeding. The males really attack the worms as I put them in but the females are a bit more timid about it.

Schuyler
I've read that they are ready to breed on average after 12-14 weeks. I put a male in with the females and he would approach the females but they never went to the spawning area. Probably still a bit small. This time they were fighting without any food involved. One of them had the other by the jaw.

The one in that last picture is a cheap little aquatop. The other, bigger one I'm not sure what it is, I got it second hand.

So is it not a good idea to keep males and females together at all times then with the annuals? Or only if they are all sexually mature?

My experience is limited but from what I've seen with my mature pair is that the female gets harassed quite a bit if it's just a 1:1 ratio. Some people keep them separated, move a male in with the females for a few days, and then take him out a few days to give them time to recover. I was worried that the skewed sex ratio could make it hard on the few females that were left. @Fish Folk had more experience with annuals Edited February 22 by Schuyler

If you had them all in a tank together and had more males than females turn out then the females would have a rough time fighting off all the boys from mating and feeding like you said.
Schuyler
They got a big upgrade today. Long term they will probably be consolidated to one tank as they numbers go down but for now males and females get their own 10 gallon tank. This is in my garage on a metal storage rack with some wood placed over it. The light is probably temporary. That's what I normally use for growing seedlings indoors. That 5g just had Christmas moss trimmings in attempting to propagate.

My killis haven’t jumped but they make me nervous during maintenance up at the surface curious what my hand is doing!

There is a background between them so they can't see each other but yes lids are coming in the near future. I think/hope that they are still too young to really jump. Their last setup didn't have a lid and I didn't see them make any attempts. Come to think of it though, I did have the water level much lower... It may be a good idea to find a temporary lid for now

Schuyler
Woof... Double whammy. I went in this morning and half the females were belly up and the males were all at the bottom looking pretty pale. I think the 100% water change and possibly the fact that I used prime shocked the females. I did a small water change with just tap water, added extra dechlorinator, and popped in an extra sponge filter. They seem to be pulling together now. None of them have died. With the males it looks like the heater I put in there was dead and the tank was at 65 rather than 75... Don't trust cheap Amazon heater! They all seem to be improving but none of them want to eat yet. We'll see how they are doing in the morning

Even the females who were belly up are alive?! I’m so thankful I don’t have to worry about having a heater with my tanks being in the house! It’s a very easy thing to easily overlook you kind of just expect them to do their job and heat!
