Schuyler
Good news. Some of them are eating but they're not back to their begging puppy dog levels of eating yet. I imagine it will take them a few days to recover from the cold and whatever may have hurt their gills. Last night I made cardboard lids, stuck a seed warning mat between them, and covered all that with a blanket. This morning one tank was 77° and the other was 73°. I'm picking up a heater on my way home from work today. Something I forgot to mention was that I gave four of the males away to start evening out the sex ratios. The lids alone will help out holding some heat in! I don’t like the cold either so I know how they feel lol. Where did you give the males away to? Schuyler
While I was at work my son (4 yo) checked on the fish and the boys were all laying on the bottom. He ran to tell mommy and she moved them all over to the girl tank which had the heater. Honestly, I can't believe I hadn't thought of that... The new heater is in and the temps leveled out so now the boys are back in their own tank so that the girls can get a break. But now everyone is looking much happier. There were quite a few coming up and begging. I heard someone in a podcast say "a begging fish is a healthy fish" and I can definitely see where he gets that now. It looks like the chlorine or drying out like off a bunch of the beneficial bacteria on the glass and sponge. Now there is a white haze. I did a 25% water change to try and clear some of that up but I also didn't want to risk stressing the fish with another large water change. The water doesn't show any ammonia in testing so at least that's good. We'll have to keep a close watch on them. Schuyler
The killis got some frozen bloodworms today. It's always fun because they will come beg, I'll give them a worm, they'll swim off, munch on it for a while, and come back to beg again. That's filter floss pulled from my main canister filter to try and get more bacteria in the tank

Schuyler
The fish seem to have fully rebounded from that rough patch. Now they are quite vibrantly colored again and seem to be going through a growth spurt. I am a bit miffed though... I don't think I'll be giving free fish to people unless I know them. I just saw a post on a Facebook group from the person I gave those killis to. She was looking to trade them for other fish. I guess they are her fish and she can do what she wants with them but it feels... Bad

I am shocked someone would want to trade those fish away! I see where you’re coming from being that you were kind enough to give someone free fish and they are just trading them away now for something else. On the other hand hopefully now they will go to someone who will fully appreciate them!
Schuyler
Success! I introduced a male to the female tank with a spawning site. Sure enough, there's spawning going on: One step closer to completing the life cycle 1

Yep just an old salsa jar that I boiled and scrubbed to get all the glue and food off. Then it's coco coir inside.

Schuyler
It's crazy how fast they establish a hierarchy. When I put the two males into the female tank they were roughly the same coloration. When I came to take them out the smaller one was much lighter. They really wear their feelings on their sleeve. I pulled the coco coir out to get an idea of how many eggs there were. I used some techniques I learned in my other Notho thread. I'm going to try incubating in warm water for three weeks and seeing how that goes. So I had a small cup of water and a swab with one the cut off (they recommended a toothpick but I didn't have one so I improved). I spread the coir out and any time I found an egg I would dip the cut end of the swab in the water, then touched it to the egg to pick it up, and dipped it in the water to add it to the cup. Now to store it at 85° for a few weeks and see if there's a visible change.

I plan to keep them on a little box under my cat's heated bed. Schuyler
Well roughly half of the eggs fungused up. Which makes me wonder how many do that normally and we just don't know because they're in the tank. I picked the clean ones out and put them in a new cup.
Schuyler
So far, no more signs of fungus Fingers crossed that these ones are fertilized and healthy

That batch was just from one day and the are about 10-12 left. The plan is to get eggs while I have a bunch of them so that there is a little more diversity in the eggs. Then I'm going to downsize to a trio.
Schuyler
It worked! They skipped diapause II completely and they are already developing into embryos with little eyes any everything. I also made a little video. Making this definitely gave me a greater appreciation for how much work goes into the content ACO puts out.
