OK, so I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to aquariums. It all started last Christmas when my kids said I needed a hobby ( I had been widowed a year earlier) and I had been talking about setting up a tank. So for Christmas they surprised me with a 4" Discus that they paid a small fortune for and I didn't even have a tank setup yet.

So I needed to get the fish out of the bag and I had no clue how to care for any fish, so I went to pet supermarket and bought a 20 gallon tank kit with all the "fixings". A few hours later the discus was in his new home and I thought I need to watch some videos to see what I need to do.

Long story short my poor fish lasted three weeks, and I was heartbroken but realized that I need to research Fishkeeping before I get another pet. For three months I ran my tank(s) ( oh and bought two 55's and a 75) and cycled them and filled them with plants and driftwood. A few months ago I added shrimp to one tank and mystery snails to the other and a Betta to the twenty gallon, I still have a 55 that just has been scaped.

Every body is doing fine and actually the shrimp and snails had a population explosion, lol.

Enjoying my new journey and look forward to learning from this amazing forum.

Newbie myself here! Your tanks are lovely. Loss of your discus had to be gut-wrenching but it looks like you didn't let that set you back! Welcome to the group.

It was devestating losing my discus because I had no clue what I was doing and felt so bad that such a beautiful fish died because of something I did (or didn't do)

Well it looks like you have the scaping part down. They look great. Sorry to hear about the discus but with how far you have come in getting your tanks set up your well on your way to another one if you so desire.

I have been trying real hard to learn as much as possible, mostly from Y'alls posts and journals, and yeah I have the itch for another tank lol

Well done for staying with it after such a set back, and those tanks look great love the tiki heads.

Thank you, I deliberated on adding the tikis and such but thought they looked cool so in they went, my betta tank even has a little sign that says No Fishing lol, I know a little tacky

Welcome! Your tanks look amazing. With those bigger sized tanks you have lots of options!

still trying to figure what to do with them, the 75 turned into a snail tank and I gave a few hundred away to a friend that keeps fish and he gave me a few dozen tetras and rasboras. the 55's are shrimp tanks that have a few Kuhli Loaches in them

Once again thank you all again and I will continue to follow and learn from you all!

By the way here is a picture of my beautiful Discus Andy. Really wish I knew better how to care for him.

To be honest my girls told me the fish store didn’t want to sell him to them because they didn’t know what they were doing or nor did I. My girls are a little over the top and made a scene and threatened to start writing bad reviews of the store.

When I found out how my girls acted I went to the store and apologized. they are actually the store I use to buy most of my fish stuff from

Talk about being thrown in the deep end!

Funny how many of these getting into the hobby stories involve getting a fish because of children insisting on one.

Welcome! Looks like you found your hobby

If you already have a massive snail colony you could set up a pea puffers tank

It was totally unexpected but I am thrilled. I was unprepared to care for such a pet and still feel terrible but,I finally have a hobby! I did think of the pea puffers, I was thinking of asking my LFS if they would like some of them, I've been giving them away to people that I find out are in the hobby that I run into. thanks for the welcome!
