Mark's shrimp tanks has one where he just literally went and added a lot of ceramic rings to the back corner of the tank. That would give the shrimp some hides and some biological media. Adding lava rocks as well works too.  You can also just add another sponge filter.

Ultimately, take everything you have and swap over to a 20L aquarium and then go ahead and add a second sponge filter. The problem is likely solved.  You can change out more water, but you also have more volume to keep things stable in terms of buffers too!

You can always upgrade to a HoB if need be.

I think I'll buy an ACO medium sponge filter and start running it in there so when I'm ready for my 20L I'll already have one of my filters packed with BB. I just ripped the band-aid off and tested the water after months of not doing it. Results are good!

PH: 7.6

Ammonia: 0

Nitrite: 0

Nitrates: 40

GH: 12

KH: 3

I'm still going to add the extra filter but I'm happy with what I just saw.
