In his place, two tiny belly slider males are coming in after a harrowing journey of being half swallowed by a sibling. I figure they're too small to really do any damage yet and even if they wanted to it would be hard for them to catch anyone. Looking for names for them. Schuyler Posted June 30, 2023 Author Share Posted June 30, 2023 (edited) Big day with sad and happy news. Sad first: There is a sick pygmy cory... It has a fuzzy fin and pop eye. Luckily it came out and say on a leaf while I was doing water change so I was able to catch him. Now he's in his own little tote getting treated with some ick X and maracyn. No matter which way the treatment goes I think I'm going to add to the cory school. Right now it looks like there are about nine in there but hopefully I can bump that up to 15 at least. Because of that and because it's the end of the month I did a big water change and filter cleaning. Guppies are popping out get every time I look in the tank. Now für the exciting news! One of the Fundulopanchax Gresensi eggs I ordered about two months ago has finally hatched! I literally just asked this morning in a Killifish group if there was any chance they were still viable. The dwarf hair grass is basically dead and gone. The pygmy cory that was sick seemed to get better and was returned to the tank. If it was him then I suspect the females would have bites too. I'll bet that is actually an issue with male female ratios and males fighting. It was funny because I knew like 80% of the fish until we got to the cichlid dude of the sure and I had no idea... I think I may have lost one or two. I've started target feeding them and doing more brine shrimp (which they'll actually come out to eat if they smell it in the water). They'll come out at night too occasionally but they don't perch as much as when I first got them. Here are my theories (and it could be some combination): 1) It's just an are thing 2) They find more food in the plants 3) They need a bigger school to feel safe on there open so they prefer to stay in the shade of the plants 4) The sparkling Gourami pick on them 5) Maybe the killifish were forcing them to come out of hiding more Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ever since being transplanted into this tank, the Amazon sword has been much smaller and has looked like it's struggling. Today I noticed what looks like a second bunch popping up next to it. Update on those eggs I ordered on the mail. The fry are growing and I've introduced them to the slightly older one that hatched from eggs I got from a local club member. There was a bit of flairing initially but they seem to be getting along alright now without any real aggression. The big one is just staying to get spots on his tail. I had assumed he was a female the for quite a while. Oh... And the number of fry popping out is starting to be alarming... Here's a before shot: And after cutting but not replanting: Here's an interesting view you don't normally get. You can see some of the hygrophilia starting to grow out of the water on the right. It also looks like the crypt plants are sending off new plants. They may need to get moved but I'm not brave enough to do that yet... Then we went to the fish store and got more pygmy corys. The worker said if I bought 12 he would give me a $1 off their price. So I got 12! He actually seemed kinda excited about it too. So far it does seem like they are out and about more. Now they have a nice big school of ~21 (never totally sure how many there still were) Here's one hanging out on a leaf with a belly slider: Then we took the kids to the lake to go swimming but along the way there was a yard sale with a sign that read "tanks 4 sale". Obviously we had to stop. The tanks were all 50-60 gallon but I did get two small heaters and an air pump for $1 each. Then at the lake I noticed the was guppy grass and parrots feather growing in the swimming area. Finally, after the kids went down I planted some of the stuff back in the tank (that was cut earlier, not stuff from the lake pretty sure parrots feather is banned). They hide a lot then go on spurts of roaming a lot. They finally stopped being she all together when I put my bandit Cory in with them. I have noticed they like to play in dense ground cover. That’s usually in the back with tall plants they can frolic in. I move my plants around to accommodate this and Maude their playground in an area I get to watch. It worked. Great journal. I wish I had a before image because the plants have really started exploding! It's time for a serious trim... That limnophilia in the back middle seems to grow half an inch a day In other news, my daphnia culture tub has suddenly started having it's water levels drop dramatically. Which is odd since the weather has seriously cooled down. Well this morning I think I found the culprits! I'm pretty sure these baby raccoons have been playing in it.
