Semi-budget 40g Breeder Aquascape Journal

Sad day...

The male eggers killi died too. Now I'm thinking it was something more than just age. Yesterday he looked off, tilting a bit and breathing heavily. I suspected that was because of ammonia or something in the water but nothing showed up in tests. I did a 50% water change just in case and added in an air stone. That didn't seem to change anything and today he gradually lost swim bladder control and quickly progressed from tilting forward to being upside down.

My guess is some kind of bacterial infection... Maybe?

Umm... Are these cory fry?

PXL_20230407_160139338.jpg.d10f8da4e572a9cdc0bf969a04250831.jpg

There are at least three of them and they have bigger bellies than the guppy fry I've seen. The only options really are guppies, corys, and sparkling gourami. The gourami haven't shown any nesting behavior though. We'll see if they develope.

Nope not cory fry...

They were just the very first few guppy fry from a batch and they hadn't filled their swim bladder yet. I caught them out and moved them to the 2.5 that had held my Eggersi pair. First I flushed it out and did some deep cleaning of the substrate so that if there was anything in there that caused them to die hopefully it's cleared out now.

There was also one fry that was half black.

Big mama shrimp had been out and about a lot recently. I think she's big enough that the fish ignore her. Her color has developed some too. Now there's more red making it almost maroon or burgundy.

My tank needs some love. This weekend I'll be seeing off the val at the local club auction then doing don't big cleanup.

Meet Fred

PXL_20230420_145859367.jpg.28e48a6485993da5b12c9c5152c875ba.jpg

He was a runny and picked on. He was spending all his time trying not to get attention by fading his colors and hiding by the filter. I figured I'd give him a chance in the display tank and hopefully his submissive personality and small size keeps him out of trouble. Hell be watched closely...

The auction haul:

PXL_20230423_024419772.jpg.7d109fef7f363ae11aafa0e9069fd32f.jpg

Most of those plants I got for $1. By the end there weren't many people. Plus a bunch of hykari food samples (not that I need to buy even more foods...

After selling some val and killi eggs I ended getting $6 in the end.

I also traded @Patrick_G a killifish trio for and Japan golden guppies and moss. When I put them in the tank they gave me a bit of a scare by lying on the bottom but they eventually snapped out of it and seem happy enough now.

They did pretty well. They averaged to $25 each but they were later in the auction. I bet they would have gone for more earlier in the auction.

I floated the Killifish in a tank with another male and the colors really came out! The fish already in the tank, really wasn’t happy to see the newcomer, but the sparing behavior was spectacular.

Sometimes those auctions just draaaag. I usually pack up and leave after half an hour.
*If there’s nothing interesting 😈

Haha yeah they had to really push near then eggs to get out before their scheduled time ended. The whole thing was 6 hours of bidding. I helped out with recording bids and running items

Packaging looks decent though...does egg appearance change between genus?

They are definitely larger but I asked in a killifish group and they said they're fungused up. The seller said he'll try and send some again if he gets more

Did a much needed monthly cleaning.

Before:

After:

I was worried because the the corys almost never came out. I was nervous that maybe some of them had died because the most that were ever seen at once was three.

Well after the water change they came out in force and it looks like all ten are still there!

They are so cute. I hope they make it to adulthood and remind you of their parents forever.

I had a batch bad of rosy barbs, but I got surprise fry from the floating plants I moved to my snail/endler tank! We both have fry to remind of their parents now.

So, did you get your son swordtails? 😄

No he didn't end up asking for some. He was just pointing out what they were.

Plus we already have one type of livebearer popping out fry like crazy...

The seller came through. I got a new batch and it looks healthy. Now it's just the waiting game again...

Poor Fred... He has become a hopeless romantic, spending a good portion of his time trying to mate with very confused juvenile guppies. He's not that picky either, as long as they're roughly his size and lightly colored he'll give it a shot. It's funny because the guppy response seems to be "hey man, you're kinda in my space. Do you mind?"

That said, I think he's much happier here than with the big boy killis who would beat him up.

Got slightly better pictures:

Fred's girlfriend (or at least the one he follows the most) is looking pregnant. It's almost impossible that they would be hybrids but that would be pretty crazy if they were...

There is a guppy with an iridescent sheen that looks powder blue in normal light but when the light turns to the blue, night mode he practically glows. I couldn't get a great picture because they get excited and think I'm going to feed them any time I get close.

Something came in the mail today...

PXL_20230427_204048717.jpg.3d48a2abfee51b3fcbb0722fec1930b3.jpg

I finally folded and got some Fundulopanchax Gresensi eggs from Aquabid. I'm a bit nervous though because the eggs look pretty opaque... But I don't really know what to expect for this genus.

I guess I missed mentioning, the seller replaced the eggs. He also recommended incubating then for 22 days before hatching. Well that was Monday and they've been in water but no signs of hatching yet. So I pulled out my microscope and there is still a pulse and movement in the eggs so that's a good sign.

I also checked the Nothobranchius Ruudwildekampi eggs and they look like they should be ready to hatch but they just aren't wanting to come out... I gave them a stir and blew in some bubbles to up the CO2 pressure since that's supposed to help trigger hatching. Well see...

Did some overdue cleanup hair algae has really taken off, especially in the moss. The moss is barely attached anymore and I'm considering just removing it, it's covering up an anubias and a buce. Probably should do a water change soon.

I may actually need to start adding nitrogen, I think that's the limiting factor.

It’s still really impressive tho! All it’s missing is a school of tetras and it could be the Amazon!

That's funny, my dad has been telling me the same thing. He used to do aquarius a long time ago.
