Canuck AquaTropix
We just noticed that pour Fluval 406 canister filter stopped working late last night due to a power outage. When the power came back on the impeller must have jammed. It hasen't worked for about 17 hours. Is the beneficial bacteria still alive? It it safe to turn it on without cleaning out all the media? JettsPapa
It's my understanding that if it's kept wet at least a portion of the bacteria will live for weeks. At less than a day I doubt if you've lost much, if any.
WhitecloudDynasty
It's base on how much oxygen was in the filter at that time. One reason I don't like canister filter, since it's close off very little oxygen get there unless the water is moving.

It could be a problem or could be just fine. That’s the risk with a canister filter during a power out or stoppage for whatever reason. Open it and smell it. If it smells normal there’s a decent chance you could just run it. If it stinks, rinse, dump old water out, then run as usual. You probably won’t have to completely replace media, just rinse it with dechlorinated water (old tank water is fine). If it still smells foul after rinsing, I’d replace it just to be on the safe side.
