Java Box

Recommended Posts

When preparing to raise baby fish, it’s helpful to have a “Java box” ready. I use a small shoe-box-sized Sterilite container, housed underneath my tank stand on a shelf, with muted light overhead.

I have a small sponge filter running, and Java moss + Java fern just going in there. I add a few ml. of Flourish at each top-off with tank water siphoned from above.

It’s ready to go as a hatching place for eggs, or grow-out for fry.

Is this about a gallon? Realistically how many and for how long can a container like this be utilized?

It’s about 1.75 gal that I keep in there. It goes indefinitely. I top off with cycled water, feed flourish, and drop in eggs. Pretty easy.

That part (keeping it going indefinitely) is understandable but I should have been more specific- how long do you keep fry in there? I don't imagine you grow them out in it for long?

Oh! No, just long enough to get them free-swimming for a week or two, then move to another tank!
