  1. Wow... thanks @Cory for a ton of information and sorry for opening a can of worms...lol. You spent a lot of time giving us a lot of information during a time when you have so much work to do.  You have a very good business sense and you run a company with awesome customer service.  Nothing on this list will stop me from shopping at your site.  Thanks again for the information.

  2. Is this Popeye on this Molly?  I put her in the 10 gal QT with 3 tbsp of salt.  It's the same fish, one pic was taken before she got moved to QT.

  3. An update on this...I took the Purigen out of all of my tanks, replaced it with the fine poly pad and they are all still crystal clear.  So far, I found that I can get about 2-3 weeks out of a pad and I haven't had any (or very little) ammonia spikes when I add new fish.  My QT tank that only has two fish and a ton of floating water sprite hasn't had to be changed yet.  Purigen did help take out tanins, so I'm going to keep it around for when I add new wood.

  4. Thanks!  I use the wishlist and I also keep things in my cart that I want to order the next time I place an order.  It's just that I don't get an email when those items come back in stock, so that I can make sure I get them before they sell out again.

  5. I' hoping that I don't step on anyone's toes or frustrate anyone by starting this topic.  I just thought I had some decent ideas that would help customers and Aquarium Co-Op.  I thought of two good ideas for new features for the Aquarium Co-Op website.

    • On each product page, there could be a related products section.  For example, on the sponge filter page, you could have links to the airstone, the tubing, USB nano air pumps, etc.  It would make it much easier than having to navigate the site looking for these items.
    • A "What's New" section that would highlight new products.  If you have customers that don't look at YouTube or aren't on the forum, they might not know about the new Easy Planters.  And thinking about this feature, a "notify me when back in stock" button for out of stock items.  I has looking for Anubias Bareri and it's been out of stock for a few days.  I happened to check back this morning and saw they were back in stock and placed my order.  If it were something else and I didn't check back for a few days, I could have missed that they were back I stock.

I'm in I.T. so I understand that as simple as something might sound, I know it could take a while, but thought I would put this out there.

...According to the fishing tackle companies, fish can't see red. That's why fish hooks are red, and there's even red fishing line. It's said to disappear at 3 1/2 feet in depth.

I fish a lot, both along the Louisiana coast and in the Gulf of Mexico.  Any scuba diver will confirm this, but red is the first color to "disappear" from the color spectrum.  This is the reason some fish hooks are red.  I don't know the depth at which it can't be seen, but I would think that it depends on the clarity of the water and how far sunlight can penetrate the water.

  7. I am going to make my first attempt at instant cycling a new aquarium.  I have 4 other aquariums that I cycled the "old school" way...lol.  I have a sponge filter in a quarantine tank that I'm going to use in the new aquarium.  How do I know if the aquarium is instantly cycled or how long I need to wait to determine if it's cycled?  Will it crash if I wait too long to put fish in it?

  8. @StephenP2003 out of curiosity, are you using different lights on your tanks?  The betta tank, with the exception of the anubias and the tall plant that was in the background, seems to doing the best.  I notice a difference in my aquariums with different lights.  I don't have any Fluval lights, but so far, I like the Hygger better than the Finnex.  And I like both of those better than the Aqueon LED lights I've had.

BTW...all of your aquariums look good.

  9. I don't think I have a favorite brand, but there are quite a few that I like the ingredients of.  I like Xtreme, but I think that a lot (not all) of their products have very similar ingredients.  I might feed the Krill Flakes to my tropical tanks, but the slow sinking pellets are almost the same ingredients.  I'll feed the pellets to my cichlids.  The same with Bug Bites.  I like theirs too, but a lot of the first 3 or 4 ingredients are the same.  And I like Repashy too.  To me, these all have too quality ingredients and my fish love them all.

I like to feed a variety, so I have a lot of different brands to mix up ingredients.

I'm curious about this, but I' wondering if most people rotate a lot of food or stick to one or two foods.   I try to feed a different food each day of the week (Sunday they don't get fed).  I like that the fish get a variety and I think it's a little more healthy for them and it helps their color, in my opinion.  Beside the vegetables that I keep in the freezer, I don't have any frozen food.  I'm about to start hatching some baby brine to see if it's a pain and how much my fish like it.  Below is what I feed, some of it is going away and some of it is for bottom feeders, so it looks like a lot.

    • Blanched zucchini and canned green beans - everyone loves these two.
    • Xtreme Krill Flakes - I love this one and will keep reordering
    • Xtreme Sinking Wafers - I'm not crazy about it because my fish don't like it
    • Fluval Bug Bites Algae Crisps - My fish like it and I like the ingredients - going to try the smaller version below
    • Fluval Bug Bites Tropical Formula (small bites) - I like this one also and so do my fish - I'll keep reordering this one.
    • Fluval Bug Bites Bottom Feeder Granules - New - Trying to see if my plecos, shrimp, snails and ottos like this.
    • Fluval Spirulina Flakes - This is new also to see if the fish like it.
    • Hikari Betta Pellets - I'm not crazy about the ingredients in this.  It will be replaced as soon as it's empty (maybe sooner)
    • Hikari Freeze Dried Blood Worms - The fish love this and will keep this in the rotation
    • Hikari Vibra Bites - Not too crazy about the ingredients, but  wanted to see what the hype was about.  This will be replaced - I'm already feeding Krill Flakes, so nothing new here to see
    • Hikari Crab Cuisine - got this for the shrimp and snails for some calcium, but will try something new (Xtreme Shrimp or Denerle)

I just picked up a small bottle of Soilent Green from my LFS this weekend.  The smell isn't too plesant, but so far I love it and my bottom feeders do too. Figuring out the right quantity to feed is the next step.

I'm not a fan of Shrimp King purely because my shrimp won't eat it, every time I've used it there has been >70% of the portion remaining after a few hours while with the normal staples it's either completely gone or mostly gone. I value a good formulation for pet food but my highest priority is making sure my pets will actually eat it.

I would probably be more okay with it if the price point weren't so high.

Yes, you are correct, making sure the fish eat it is important.  I bought Xtreme Sinking Wafers and was excited to be able to start feeding it to the shrimp, snails and plecos, but no one except for the snails would touch it. So yes, ingredients can be great, but it does no good if your fish don't like it.  Good point.

...My shrimp alternate between shrimp cuisine, crab cuisine, and snowflake food however I ran out recently and decided to sample Shrimp King (this was a mistake)....

Why didn't you like Shrimp King?  That's on my list of food I want to try after I run our of Crab Cuisine.

Honestly, I don't think, for the most part (with a few exceptions), Hikari ingredients are that that great.  Take Crab Cuisine, for example.  I would think that Calcium would be a large part of the food.  From the Hikari Crab Cuisine page...

    INGREDIENTS
Fish meal, flaked corn, rice bran, wheat flour, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, krill meal, brewers dried yeast, fish oil...

    GUARANTEED ANALYSIS

Crude Protein Crude Fat Crude Fiber Moisture Ash
    min. 31.0% min. 4.0% max. 3.0% max. 10.0% max. 11.0%
Phosphorus Vitamin A Vitamin D3 Vitamin E Ascorbic Acid Calcium
    min. 0.7% min. 19,000 IU/kg min. 2,900 IU/kg min. 610 IU/kg min. 430 mg/kg min. 0.7%

The second, third, forth and fifth ingredients, are to me, things that I would not want to feed my "fish" in those quantities.  Corn, rice, wheat and soybean are before krill.  Right before I started this thread, I started looking at ingredients much more carefully, so there are things that I want to replace once I run out.  I only feed crab cuisine once a week, so I'm not in a huge rush right now.

  13. I don't have any suggestions, except for make sure it's someone you know and trust.  If someone's fish get sick or something else happens at the same time they start feeding the food you gave them, it might not be a good situation.  I personally wouldn't take food from someone that I didn't know.  I got a sample of food that I haven't heard of before in with a shipment and I threw it away.  It had the ingredients listed that I wasn't crazy about (the second ingredient was a filler\binder) and I didn't like the smell.  It's not worth the risk when you can buy quality food for less than $10.

After re-reading this, I hope it didn't come across wrong and I don't mean to sound offensive, just stating my perspective.

  14. I really like watching your live streams.  You stick to the top and talk about it without being interrupted or going off topic for a good amount of time.  In addition, when you answer live chat questions, you do a great job of explaining your answer instead a of a quick one sentence answer.  One day, I'm going to be able to make the live show.

  15. I personally think it's a quality control issue.  The motors for the 20-70 models are the same.  The difference for each unit is in the impeller.  The 70 that I have the impeller issue with also happens to be the loudest.  Not only does it have the typical rattling top, but the motor is also loud.  My other Aquaclears are next to silent.  I personally think that there is something out of spec on my 70.

I no longer run my AquaClear hob, but I experienced the same issues. For your future reference, every time I turned the filter off, the impeller had to be cleaned out or would not run. So... you'll know for next time. 😁👍

I have 4 Aquaclears and this only happens on my Aquaclear 70

Likely it's just something in the impeller, have you removed the intake and touched the impeller ?

Most of the time, when I do water changes, if I forget to clean the impeller, the motor won't run in my Aquaclear.  It's very simple,  Make sure you do this over a sink.  Remove the motor by turning it a quarter of a turn.  You will see the impeller.  Simply pull it out (it's magnetized).  Rinse it under water and get the gunk off of it and slide the impeller back onto the pin..  At this point, I plug the motor in for a second just so that I can see that the impeller will spin.  Put the motor back on, put the filter back on your tank, prime the filter and plug it in.  You are good to go (hopefully).

Wow! I learn something new on the forum everyday!

Yep, I've never seen that before and I didn't notice it until I posted these pictures.  Those are (were) the only two snails in that aquarium.  I ended up taking the male out because he was on the female close to everyday for a couple of weeks.  The female was much more pretty and I didn't want her to get too stressed out and die.  Also when the first picture was taken, she had already laid about 5 clutches of eggs and I didn't want anymore.
