    Nothing is plug and play.

    My CO2 system:

    5lb CO2 tank

CO2Art Pro-SE Regulator. Controls flow, and timing of CO2 via smart plug.

Porter Instrument Company B-1267 Rotometer. Used to monitor flow rate.

Drop checker. Used to monitor pH drop.

Cerges Reactor made from water filter canister. Achieves near complete dissolution of CO2.

I'd suggest you read up on CO2. Lots of good articles here.

Appreciate it. Yeah, I just meant that they made this canister kit seem like it was a simple way to get some CO2 in the tank. I've been wanting to do a more serious set up (already have a small CO2 tank) but thought this might be a nice way to try it out. Man was I wrong. Really appreciate all your responses.

What kind of regulator does it have? How many bubbles per second or minute were you running?

How was it diffusing into the water?

@AndEEssI bought that Ista CO2 Starter Kit that Aquarium Co-op sells. It's directions are pretty simple, just connect and fill the chamber so the CO2 can absorb into the water. No one told me if I needed to account for tank size or any other factors. Just plug and play. Now I have to go buy 3 new gourami's because the one guy is all alone. I should've asked more questions when I bought it.

I would turn off your co2 system and add an an extra air stone straight away it sounds like you may have had you co2 set to high and it lowered the levels of desolve oxygen in your tank killing your fish

@ColuIt hit me right after I posted that the third one was dead. I bought that Ista CO2 starter kit. There's no directions on how much should go in the tank, but to basically fill the chamber up. I have a 20 gallon tank. Should I turn my jets up to stir up the water?

@AndEEssI think you are right. Bought that Ista CO2 kit. That's the only major factor I introduced. I'm so pissed at myself.

  4. I hate writing these posts,

I was just in Aquarium Co-op today and bought a CO2 kit, one honey gourami (to go with my other three), a dwarf chain loach (to go with my other three), and two amano shrimp. I did my normal routine of acclimating them to my tank and installed the CO2. Then about 2.5 hrs later, I found the new gourami dead along with my other, smaller gourami dead. I have no clue how this could happen. Water levels normal. Did a small water change yesterday but that's it. I would have thought maybe the new gourami was stressed but I don't get how my other one died as well. Would really appreciate any help here.

This is going to sound crazy but it feels like whenever I mess with my tank (water change, new fish...), something dies.

  5. @JettsPapaThis is super helpful. Glad I ordered the Seachem to compare. I actually have Aquarium Coop's Iron as well but never knew what to use it for so I will start dosing with that to see if there is any improvement. Additionally, I also have a higher ph water in my tank (really weird because my tap isnt). Thanks!

    I dose potassium between 15 to 30ppm. I'm currently dosing 25 to 28ppm K.

@Mmiller2001 Just curious, what do you use to dose with potassium?

  6. @SalRealized I didn't provide those after I posted 🙂

My Nitrates are a little on the high side, possibly due for a water change but they aren't alarming (also just gave them food). Zero Nitrites. The only thing is that I've noticed over the past month or two that my hardness has increased. Not really sure what could be the cause of that as I haven't changed water sources or introduced anything new.

  7. I was taking a break from staring at my screen to watch my fish and I noticed these two acting sorta weird. Usually they follow each other around but I've never seen them do this. It also looks like one of them has some discoloration on the sides (not as clear patterns as the other) and also might have some distress in the gills but I can be certain. Here's the link to the video. Thanks for any help:

I used to have 6 Otos, lost 2 few months ago, during the last 6 weeks I have lost the rest, one day that have just stopped eating. Water parameters are very good and I change water on a regular basis.

I think that I am done with this fish.

Yeah, sounds similar to what ccurtis was saying. I do really like these fish. I'm not sure what else I would get instead of one. I don't really want a pleco.

How long have you had this tank set up? Otto's in my experience are kind of hit or miss. They either live or die within a few weeks of getting them. I have a few in my tank that I have had for about year and they are thriving, however I did lose a few before I got them to thrive. Otto's tend to do better in a tank that had been established for a while.

I've had the tank up since January I think. I kind of agree that Ottos seem to be hit or miss. I might wait to introduce any more if I get them again. I do really like them versus getting a pleco.

I’m sorry you lost your Otos! You mentioned you had a bloom of diatom algae. Is it a new tank? Are you able to post Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrate levels?

The Diatom bloom was quite a while ago. The tank has cycled since then. I'm currently showing 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and around 5-10ppm of Nitrate.

  11. I hate creating these posts.

I have a 20 gal tank that had a diatom algae overload. I got two Otos to help manage it and maintain a clean tank. 2 weeks ago one Oto died unexpectantly and I just found my other one dead this morning. My water levels have stayed pretty consistent and I try to check their stomachs to see if they are nice and full but after the first one died, I noticed that the remaining Oto was hiding a lot more which made sense. But it made it difficult to see if he's been eating.

I'm trying to look for factors that could affect this. Lack of food could be one of them. It's possible they weren't eating (even though there is algae in the tank but maybe not what they liked). This worries me because I have a Siamese Algae Eater as well and I really dont want anything to happen to it.

The only other thing I am noticing is my ph is a little high (7.6 on "low ph test and 7.4 on high ph test). My water from the sink is at around 6.8 so something in the tank is causing it to rise, I think. Everything else for my water is really good. Which is frustrating because I do my best to keep my water great for the fish.

I just don't know what else could have caused them to die all of the sudden.

    Thanks for the help/advice.

  12. Thanks for the response. I thought maybe he was just old? I'm trying not to jump to conclusions but I'm also not noticing some lighter spots on a few of the danios. They aren't bumps, as in, they don't stick out. Is this just discoloration or something else? I am also noticing the fish's buddy kinda swims the same way and isnt as active as the other danios.

  13. I have a Zebra danio that looks noticeably slimmer than my others (fish on the right). I was watching him today and I also noticed that he doesn't eat and he seems to be struggling to swim (ie he is nowhere near as active as the other ones). He has a buddy (fish on the left) that seems to stay close by him and sorta nudges him around as well.

My water levels look good and all the other fish appear normal.

    Is he just old?

  14. Just wanted to quickly update this thread here. I got a amano shrimp and a Siamese algae eater. Very excited about both. The Amano went to town cleaning things but the Siamese algae eater went straight to hiding and hasn't come out for 2 days. I'm sure he's just unsure of the new environment but I also need him to get out and about and start eating my hair algae. Is this normal for a fish like this one?

  15. Thanks Inked! Yes, I will definitely do my best to not compare my tanks to that on social 🙂 Thanks for bringing up dimming the light. Last time I was in Aquarium Co-op they had mentioned about cutting certain light (blue I think) to help inhibit algae growth. I'd also be totally fine adding something that would eat the algae that the Oto's dont eat but I might hold off on that for now.

    Thanks again!
