Just did a 70% water change, and added charcoal. Fingers crossed for some fairly difficult to replace native F0 fish.

Totally thought the pvc glue was cured after 24 hours in the summertime. Rinsed the thing a couple times, didn’t smell anything, so installed it. Ran the thing for a while, and started smelling glue. Now fish are dying. Doing a big water change. Anything else y’all recommend?

Anyone know if any oak species aren’t fish safe? I’ve seen some ambiguous references to not using live oak, but I can’t find any reasons why. There’s a significant amount of live oak and tan oak growing around my home, and I’d like to use it for scaping. I’ve added live oak wood and bark to a few test tanks, and it’s SUPER tanniny. So dark it looks like strong black coffee, and I can’t even see anything in the tank.

I’ve been a bit concerned about not feeding the denitrifying bacteria quite enough. After some reading I’m thinking about adding a dosing pump to inject a bit of sugar solution into that tank timed with the output water changes. Think that would help?

I’ve made some minor modifications based on previous suggestions. Currently I’m working at a water treatment plants, so I ran my idea past the head operator. He was pretty excited about the idea, and also gave me a few pointers. However, when I started talking about denitrification he kinda glazed over. Maybe he was just short on time. Anyway, please take a look at the new version if you feel so inclined. I’m a bit concerned about the potential for major stink in my back yard when it comes to the anaerobic portion. Should I be? What can be done? Will the system balance out over time?

I’m working on plans to build out a fish room, and I’ve been thinking about using unistrut. I’m curious if you’ve had any deflection issues or rust. I’ll most likely use galvanized material, but I might be able to use stainless. We’ll see what’s leftover on my next work project…

Hello folks, I just moved into a new home in the coastal mountains in California, and there’s several issues with the local water. I’d like to lower my aquatic footprint, so I’m thinking about trying to reuse tank water by mechanically and biologically filtering it outside of my fish room. Please take a look at the very basic diagram, and let me know your educated opinion.
