My “purple dragon” guppies that were supposedly pure for many generations, fairly frequently have red pop out in the male’s tails but none in females tails.

There are many, many instances of sex linked color differences across many families - fish, birds, reptiles, spiders, other insects, to name a few, and including mammals - like the example cited for how rare calico manifests in male cats (something like 1 in 10,000 is what I read / hear most often but I’ve never seen a legit source quoted to back that number) and nearly all male calicos are reported to be sterile.

I don’t know enough about guppy genetics to give you the specific reason why the red only manifests in your males @Scapexghost, but I’m certain there’s differences in either gene presence or expression / suppression / activity that’s behind it.

purple is supposedly about the hardest color to keep pure in guppy's. purple dragons, i saw a tank full of them once, marked all sold, and they were very cool looking. i would have bought a trio or three of them, they are a great looking fish.

  2. plus or minus 2 or 3 degree's i dont worry much. after that it starts to be a concern. colder moving to slightly warmer isnt so bad, but warm moving to colder can really shock them. so more than a few degrees put them in a bucket with water from the tank they are coming from, and add a little water from the tank they are going into every few minutes . for a small difference, it likely wont take 15 minutes or so to ease them into the temp change.

Yes I was mainly concerned of the tea looking water. I don’t like it. Is there some that don’t make water brown? @lefty o

    Ok thanks!!

    Thanks. Sorry for late responses.

😂. I have seen spider wood but wasn’t sure of it.

spiderwood is the best bet for not turning the water colors.

@anewbie wow! Too small?! I'm glad my new tank is long!

its subjective. i used to have 5 SAE's in my 120, and they were just fine, but i had lots of plants they liked to lay in. only issues i ever had with them was come feeding time they would just push their way into the food. they werent aggressive, but they were getting in there and eating!

  5. you can use just about any amount of filters you want, or any combination of filters. there is no single rule that says you must run X amount of filtration per gallon. so many variables involved. you can always adjust flow of your filters, add filters to what you have, or change them for something else.

@lefty o yeah you know he and I have had several discussions about Model As, those were his first love and he's planning on building a show car with one- he laments that these cars are no longer popular in the hobby- those who are/were into them are an aging population and the younger car generations are adopting newer cars. If they are into older cars it's usually muscle cars (which neither he nor I are against).

i know some younger guys that are into them, but yeah its usually the geritol crowd that has them.
