  1. Found another dead endler, bringing the total to around 7 dead in the past 2 weeks. This makes me start thinking if its something other than old age. Thus I moved some of the endlers to my quarantine tank, a half filled 20 gallon tall. Besides that, my sparkling gourami was showing its colors today And here's pudding chilling on the glass per usual. My shrimp tank has turned into my random plant tank as well. I just threw in a flame sword, vallisneria, and monte carlo, as i currently don't have a place to put them.
  2. Did some trimming and added mayaca fluviatilis. the mone carlos growing faster than i thought it would! I did lose another of my original endlers this week though.
  3. Crypt lucens is another great small crypt that grows faster then parva! Pearlweed is great too!
  4. Been experiencing some endler deaths lately, doesnt seem to be parisites or bacterial issues and as ive had them for 2 years without any issues. I'm wondering if mass breeding and inbreeding could cause genetic defects that lead to death especially in the case of livebearers when inbreeding is so common. Could genetic defects cause them to die at a certain age or make them mich more prone to dying? While this might not necessarily be the case with my endlers (as i havnt observed them enough to rule out other issues), im just wondering in general if this is a thing that happens?
  5. I hate planting monte carlo. After the big auction last week I got a bunch of monte carlo and used it to hopefully carpet this tank, but it kept floating up and took forever to plant. In my limited experience of plants, this is probably the most annoying to plant by far.I also got a massive bag of vallisneria and added that to my other tankIt was originaly intended for a stream tank with hillstream loaches later, but thats no where near being done any time soon. This tank also has a massive mass of pearlweed that started as cuttings that just floated to the top which i never removed. It just feels so sad to part with it and through it away even though it doesn't look the best, and thus i havn't removed it. The shrimp love it though. I did some much needed maintenance on my endler tank and pulled out a bunch of floaters along with somewhat cleaning the glass. The log in their is still covered in BBA though... oh well One of the female endlers did pass away, presumably from old age, as it was 2 1/2ish and didn't look to be sick at all.
  6. For my first planted tank I did a 10 Gallon with 1inch of dirt and about 1.5inches of gravel on top of that. I did wet it down before filling, so I never really experienced any bubbles popping up. For the dirt I just used miracle-gro all purpose organic soil and have had no issues for the past 2 years, and the pearl weed and crypts are still going nuts. I never had to put any root tabs just some liquid ferts every once and a while when i remember, now the tank doesn't have a filter and all the plants do the filtering work for me. Mess wise, it doesn't seem to be much different from my fluval stratum tank, both cloud up the water significantly when disturbed. It does give off a lot of tannins which may not always look good depending on the person and style of the tank. If I dirt a tank or not just depends what I have on hand at the time I set up a new tank and what plants I plan to use.
  7. Well, Its been a while. Kinda forgot I even made a journal. Anyway, since I last posted, I have lost my Ram and one gourami, everyone else is doing great though! Shrimp tanks growing in well, pearl weeds starting to carpet! I've already got shrimplets in here to! Here's the endlers energetic and hungry as always My sparkling gourami and pleco are getting more outgoing as well I also made this terrarium using pearl weed and hydrocotle as a carpet which turned out to work quite well. Lastly, I've been experimenting with a new 29 gall paludarium layout for hillstream loaches, don't know if this is my final design yet though.
  8. Another update, sadly the ram just never seemed to accept the food and passed away yesterday probably just from starvation. 😞
  9. So i tried to feed frozen blood worms and now he actually went for them!! He didnt fully eat it. He took one bite then spit it out and moved on with life😐
  10. @Colu when should i start the second week of paracleanse. Should i start it a week after i started or on day 5 after the 25% waterchange or the next day?
  11. After the first week of treatment, the ram seems to be more interested in food, but still doesn't actively go after it during feeding time. I can see that its pooping, however its mostly white/stringy, but occasionally I can see bits of brown in there, so im assuming its eating something.
  12. These are better pictures hopefully
  13. I might be paranoid, but to me it looks like my sparkling gourami has some sort of head disease. Its a really skittish fish so sorry that the pics arnt great. Water parameters: Nitrate: <5 Nitrite: 0 Gh: 75 Kh: 120 Ph: 7.0 Ammonia: 0 Temp: 77F Im also currently treating my Bolivian ram in this tank with paracleanse.
  14. I love ferns, java fern, bolbitus and even terrestrial ferns like the rabbits foot fern, and my favorite probably being the staghorn fern. I love how natural they look wedged into crevices and the wide range of uses for texturing or filling up voids when scaping a tank. Java fern was my first live aquatic plant, never having a problem growing it, and its always exciting to see them put forth new fronds!
  15. This is my journal to document my aquariums as they grow over time, and to note things that I learn along the way! I'm a highschooler with 3 aquariums, a 10 Gallon shrimp tank, 10 gallon Endler tank, and a 29 gallon community tank. This was my first real aquarium I set up 2 years ago, my 10 Gallon Endler jungle. Two years later it looks like this...a very overgrown mess, but a fully self sustaining ecosystem without the need of a filter or that regular of water changes. Last summer I set up this tank as a community tank, 6 months later it looks like this, and is currently stocked with a Bolivian ram named Maki, a plethora of neocaridina shrimp and snails, a yellow BN pleco named pudding, and 3 sparkling gouramis named Sa, Shi, and Mi. Maki however is refusing to eat, probably due to internal parasites so this tank is currently being treated with paracleanse. Lastly, my shrimp tank that I set up 2 weeks ago.
  16. Thank you for the advice! I will do that.
  17. He still likes hanging near the bottom, breathing seams normal but I guess it does look a bit fast compared to the others, no flashing or lethargy, when he does take bites he spits them out but he doesnt really go after anything anyway and I havnt seen any poop.
  18. Yes, I have tried high protein sinking pellets. He will look at them as they float down but show absolutely no interest in them whatsoever.
  19. Ive never seen him go after the shrimp, and even if he did, his belly doesnt look full either
  20. I got a bolivian ram a bit more than a week ago from ACO for my 29gal and its still not eating. It will occasionally nibble something but then swim away. Wondering if its just stressed, or maybe internal parasites? Besides not eating its swimming around and behaving normally. I have a bunch of neocaridina shrimp and 3 sparkling gouramis and a bn pleco that are all eating and acting normally. Water parameters: Nitrate: <5 Nitrite: 0 Gh: 75 Kh: 120 Ph: 7.0 Ammonia: 0 Temp: 77F Ive fed freeze dried tubifex worms, repashy soilent green, omega one color mini pellets, xtreme krill flakes, and the xtreme shrimpee sticks
  21. I'd probably like more movement than that, so I'll probably steer away from those guys then. Harlequins look like a good option then instead of the chilis Good to know, It'll still be fun to spot it every time it appears! Besides pleco's, what other bottom dwellers could I do Thoughts on Pygmy Cories or Kuhli Loaches? Also any thoughts on Cardinal tetras?
  22. I like sparkling gouramis. How many would fit in the tank without getting territorial/aggressive? Thank you! Personally, I like the look of chili rasboras better than harlequins, and because they're smaller, theoretically I could get a larger school. I do like honeys though, and their larger size might make them stand out better than the smaller sparklings. As of now, stocking is looking like: 1x Clown Pleco 15x Chili rasboras 3x Sparkling gouramis plus the shrimp and snails currently in there
  23. I also love hillstream loaches, and have planned to do stream paludarium with them when I have the time/money! I tend to be a very indecisive person which makes this decision really difficult... I do like color, but I want to stick to something that will look natural. -Maybe chili rasboras or CPDs I honestly don't seem to care too much about activity, but I'd prefer more of a tighter schooling fish compared to a fish like endlers who tend to scatter and do whatever they want. Personality would be a plus, but not a necessity. Which gourami's would you recommend? Would pearl's be too big for this tank? I love the look of Rams, but would like to keep temperatures in more of the 78F range
