I lift the airline very slowly with a steady hand. Minimal gunk gets released. For me, the zip lock bag isn't really a necessity. I prefer the bucket method.

I do have a related question though:

When should the co-op sponge filters be cleaned? I literally never notice any diminution in air flow from them. I have cleaned them, but can't really articulate if it was necessary or not.

Is there any harm in just letting them "build-up" if the flow doesn't diminish?

I would suggest that you clean it about once every month. That is what I do and it works out fine.

You don't dose liquid carbon do you? Once I OD'ed a tank accidentally and that was the symptom set I saw. I had almost instant response to a 50% water change.

I don't. That is good to know though! thanks!

can we have the photo of the entire tank?

in the photo u posted before i see there is a ton of duckweed, maybe that is blocking out quite some of the oxygen exchange, but if you have an airstone running should still be fine, or also move the outflow from your filter over the water surface to brake it. how is the tank filtered?

I am using a sponge filter.

This does all help. I am going to use live plants but of course it will take time for them to grow in and fill out.

So this leads to another question. Anyway to keep this sand after removing? My thought would be that it'll eventually stink to high heaven after the live bacteria in it and the BB it's built up dies? Or should I just trash it? It was expensive.

I would keep it in 5 gallon buckets with lids in your garage or basement. I have not had problems with the substrate smelling, but I have never tried it with sand.  You might as well try to save it and if it smells bad you could probably sell it on craigslist or at a local aquarium club.

It be could something got in to water  I would do a 30% water change and add an extra air stone what are your water parameters

    40 ppm nitrate

    .2 ppm nitrite

    160 gh

    150 kh

    7.4 ph

I already added an airstone thinking there wasn't enough oxygen in the water. I will try a water change too. Thanks for the input!

  6. The aquarium was doing great then all of a sudden the fish started gasping and some died. The water also got a bit cloudy. All the water parameters are the same as they have always been. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!
