  1. I am building a pasture pond and a garden waterscape. Hmmm. I may be too far north ( Northern WV) to do these outside but a nice unheated scape inside would be fun and I am keen to help endangered.

  3. Yes- That is certainly a tank that I will have backup heaters in! .
  4. Thank you! Great information. My house is around 65 F/ 18 C in winter. I find I breath better if it is cool. I have many Angels/ Guppies/ Betta/ Apistos but your cool water suggestions look great. A tank or two of them is worth considering! I have a Discus tank planned and yes. Two heaters would be a must! Lovely fish! What are they? Shiners? I would like Fancy Gold fish but may do them outdoors.
  5. Greetings I have a boring topic - heaters. I know you would rather talk about the rare varieties of African Ciclids or Rainbow fish but I am pondering heaters. I have a variety of tank sizes. My house is cool. Regardless of tank size, is it better to go with higher watt heaters? OR - is tank size a limiting factor? What are reliable brands. Haha, maybe better to learn to live in 80 degree house!
  6. Thank you Daniel! This is all very interesting. This makes me want to invest in some different monitoring. While total ammonia probably drives the cycle, the concern over toxicity is important in the fish in process. I suspect that tanks may always be micro cycling as factors change. Number of fis, plant decay, water changes. I need to put some consideration toward the cause of toxic and non- toxic ammonia. I truly appreciate your time in providing this tuition!
  7. Yes, I have a bunch of tanks and have been working successfully until recently. Now I am trying to sort out problems between Old Tank Syndrome, possible over feeding, cycling new tanks and source water quality. Going a bit nuts. The test kit I am using is not to expire until 2025 but I may get another one to test against.
  8. Low range tests 7.6 High 7.4 So 7.5? Ha. Mediam High Hardness.
  9. Hi everyone! I hope your day goes well. I am a Nerm and thought I was doing pretty well. Have some ammonia issues with some new tanks. I think the gravel leached ammonia. At this point, I am checking everything! This am, checked my tap water., .5 ppm. Checked my top off bucket that had sat overnight - maybe 24 hours. Test went black green. Any advice or welcome. I have python but honestly don't like it. Another story. I guess I won't bother letting water stand to release chorine and simply always add Prime or similar. Another lesson in "Never Assume".
  10. Thanks! I had gone to that site and was a bit blown over at first. It does require some study but I am ok with that. Yeah...the poor plain fish.Maybe I will pick one of them especially if I can understand their impact.
  11. Thank you! That sounds like an awesome place to start!
  12. Hi everyone! I am busy setting up three tanks for breeding Apistos. While doing so, I got to thinking - what about setting up a tank to breed an endangered fish. Any ideas on a practical approach? Type/ Breed that is not impossible?
  13. I have always enjoyed the hobby but was out of it until I cam back this year. I enjoy keeping balanced planted tanks. Much of this is due to all the great advice found in this community.
