They need to be washed each week or they stop the flow to my aquaclear filter. The fact they get clogged mean they are filtering better. Your opinion? The more course the better- I just want it to keep out the critters. But it's all about what YOU like. You don't prefer to have the finer sponge inside the filter? Just curious. Right now I have the course sponge and purigen in my backfilter. The course sponge dosen't filter anything, it's just biological.
