Patrick M. Bodega Aquatics
Hello! I have never used a wave pump before but have seen others use it. Is it a necessity for a tank with discus? What is its purpose? Thanks!
Daniel
Wave pumps are used to increase flow in a reef tank. Because corals and other stony invertebrates are immobile (like plants) they need strong currents to bring them such things as food, oxygen, and nutrients, as well as carrying away their waste products. Discus on the other hand need just the opposite. Their natural habitat is the still waters underneath overhanging branches at riverbanks or shorelines. I would think twice about putting a wave pump in an aquarium containing discus.
Andy's Fish Den
I would not put on in with discus, as @Danielsaid, their habitat is still waters. When I kept discus I found that the clamer the water was, the more they would be out and swimming around the tank.
